Tate

While we were in Collegedale helping my friend Mike and his family out after the tornado hit their area we got a BIG education on just how many trees were lost. What to do with all of the downed trees? Well, we had a large burn pile going for the brush but most of the trees were cut for firewood. There is going to be PLENTY of firewood. PLENTY! Here you can see Tate and Zach working in one of the pastures where we put some of the trees. Some of us were piling brush, some cutting trees off of houses, some cutting trees off of fences and some clearing the roads so that people could get around.

Mike and Tara have a horse farm. You know…equestrian helmets, saddles, horses, etc. They are going to have years of work to do in order to get everything back to normal but at least they can function at this point. One of Mike’s concerns is getting to the point to where he can plant trees to help replace some of those lost. He is going to have a lot of planting to do.

I was really proud of Tate. He thinks the world of Mike and he jumped in there and learned the value of helping others. On the way home he was exhausted to this point:

But later he said it was all worth it and that we should do more.

That makes a Mom’s heart soar!

It has been interesting cooking without an oven to say the least. Planning every meal around only using the stove top and the crockpot has required some creative thinking at times. I really haven’t ever thought about just how much I use my oven…but I can guarantee that I will never take it for granted again.

Not thinking, I went and bought specific ingredients to make a recipe to share with all of you. I went to two separate grocery stores looking for one of the ingredients. I get home and start to put everything together…and then remembered that I can’t cook it. My oven doesn’t work. DUH Jyl!

So, I will be spending today looking for the part that we think we need to fix the oven. I do know that I have to order it because no one locally or in the surrounding areas carries the part that I need. It is at times like this that I could almost hate living in the country. Almost I said…the concrete jungle is no place for me.

Today, Tate is attending a karate tournament in Tennessee, he asked that I not go. He likes having that little bit of independence going on his own with the instructors from his studio. I was a little bit relieved that I didn’t have to make the long drive and spend the day sitting on the bleachers after wrenching my back several days ago. I am finally able to walk ALMOST straight again but I know that if I went I would be walking crooked once again. I just hope he tries hard, does his best and comes home with a first place trophy. He has been working really hard lately to attain that goal. He has several second, third and fourths but that first has been elusive so far.

Erin will be playing Park Ranger today. She starts back to college on Monday…she and I have both decided that this was the shortest summer ever. It just seems like it has flown by and we haven’t gotten everything done that we wanted to do. She has loved her job with the US Army Corps of Engineers and I am so grateful that she has been able to have the experience. I think her favorite part of her job has been being able to give people tickets.

All that to say…I am going to be home ALONE today!! WooHoo, that is a very rare occurrence, but since Bric also has some things to do it is going to happen today. Now I just have to decide how I am going to totally waste all of that time. And yes, I am seriously going to waste every minute of it doing whatever I want to do without being disturbed!

I hope you have a FABULOUS weekend!!

Even in the summer I’m used to being chilly because I work in an office that stays frigid. That means I normally go to work in July dressing for October weather.

So when I get home I’ll blast my air conditioning too because I’m so used to it by now. But I really suffered a few weeks ago when my air unit at home broke. I didn’t want to wait around for quotes on a new unit so I called summer HVAC installation to learn about buying a new air conditioner.

I only had to go a few days without air conditioning, because mine broke down right before the weekend. But going back and forth from the meat locker at work and my cool car to my hot house at night definitely made it worse. I just can’t seem to fall asleep if I’m in the least bit hot.

The installers were really friendly and had my system up and running in what seemed like no time. Although I complain about staying so cold at work, I’m really used to it by now.

I love long weekends! This weekend is especially special. Not only are we celebrating Independence Day but Bric and I re getting a ton of stuff done around here. It is rare that he and I are both home, even rarer when all the kids are gone. But it is just he and I today. What that means is that there are no distractions and I am cracking the whip to make things happen. I am the one who has typically done all of the yard work in the past but after I went through so many different problems with my back last year I just haven’t touched the first weed or plant. All of my Outdoor Planters are completely over-grown with weeds and looks like no one has bothered with them in years.

You could seriously get lost in the Garden Planter. Some of the weeds in that thing are as high as my head. I have visions of grandeur…I have it in my head that we can get everything done today, but from the look on Bric’s face, I am now thinking it isn’t all going to happen in one day. Of course nature didn’t take over in a day and why I think we can re-claim all the planters I am not sure but I am ready for our yard to look like someone actually lives here.

I would love to plant some flowers in our Decorative Planters but I think it is too hot this year for much of anything to survive. And, I am kinda late in the game for that as well.

How are you spending your time this weekend? I sure hope it is doing something fun!
