Historically Speaking

March 7th, 2010

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day! Apparently I was not the only one who thought so because when my niece called and said “I am bored, let’s go do something” I JUMPED at the chance. We started out by hanging around Hicktown, visiting some of the local historical sites and me telling her some of the stories about when I was young and some of the folklore I know about where we went. Over the course of the next few weeks you will get to see some of the places that we visited and hear some of those stories, but until then….let me introduce you to:

The Water Tower

What town doesn’t have one of these?

I remember one night when I was in High School a bunch of us got together to party hang out and ended up at the top of ours. The local police department was none to happy with us. They long ago took measures to make sure no more of the local yahoos could even attempt to get to the top. I was telling Steph the story and from the backseat comes many, many questions. I wish I would remember that when I drag  Tate along on our adventures I must be more reserved in the telling of some of the stories of my youth. I must remember that little tidbit. I really, really must remember!

I was rather proud of this picture..it almost looks like one of those photo cards you would pick up in a souvenir shop. Ok, except for the power lines at the bottom. I am getting better though. Those of you that have been around awhile can attest to that. Remember how horrible my first pictures used to be? Yeah, ok…we really don’t want to go there.

After we got done gallivanting about the town we headed South to visit with my sister and her girls with a few stops to make before we all met up. I took Steph to one of our favorite places…

…because she hadn’t had the opportunity to go yet. And this is one stop that is required! She was amazed at all the different types of popcorn that they have. What did she walk away with? Loaded Baked Potato Popcorn. Mmm, Mmmm Good! Owned by twin brothers, you will want to stop in and visit for the atmosphere and experience as much as for the fabulous popcorn itself. You can visit the Popcorn Haven website and browse through some of the gourmet flavors that you can find when traveling through Georgia on I-75. It is a stop that you won’t regret making. I suggest that you try the White Chocolate Pretzel Popcorn. Or the Snickers. Or the Twix. Or the Bubblegum. Ok…maybe I like them all. Just plan to stay awhile, it is so hard to choose.

After we made all of our stops along the way we met up with The Clan McLeod at a local Mexican restaurant and had supper where we all just hung out and had a great time…and I got my nose unstopped from the hot sauce. Talk about relief! Then we went to my sisters house for an evening of family and fun. We played our regular go-to card game of Shanghai Rummy and then my brother-in-law taught us all to play Texas Hold-Em. I have been a hold out on learning to play but I gave in and succumbed to the worldly ways of poker. Please don’t tell, but I think I could really learn to like it.

I have to leave you with this picture…

…because it is the weirdness that is us.

I hope that your weekend has been filled with beautiful weather, good food, friends and family.

Today, I will be spending the day at home. Cooking a long over-due typical Southern-Style Sunday dinner.

What will you be doing?

The Wrong Assumption - A Southernism

March 5th, 2010

southern0052

We all make wrong assumptions from time to time. It is inevitable, we are only human after all. I won’t ever forget the time that I called the new kid at school a boy. SHE ended up threatening to beat the crap outta me. I wasn’t scared of much, but I was scared of her. She was a major bully to many people. I think it had something to do with all the wrong assumptions made about her gender. Here in the South something we might say about making a wrong assumption is:

“Just cause a chicken has wings don’t mean it can fly”

Yep…sometimes it is easy to get it wrong. Just make sure it isn’t directed towards someone in the throws of a major identity crisis that was mentally unstable to begin with.

The Street Preacher

March 2nd, 2010

Do ya’ll have street preachers? Or is it just us folks in small towns? I have been to several large cities and have never seen them outside of the South so I am not sure if it is just something that we see or if there are street preachers in other areas.

misc-036

This is our street preacher. He stands on the corner in front of out local couthouse and he preaches to the top of his lungs. When I go by I can hear him clearly, even if I have my windows up.

I have no idea who he is..or where he got his voice, but it travels.

You have to admire that in a street preacher…when he can drone out the radio through rolled up windows.

I admire his tenacity. It was cold that day. I mean really cold. And he was out there anyway, delivering The Message.

Whatta Mouth! (Southernism)

February 26th, 2010

southern0052

Ain’t ya’ll been lookin forward to this all week??

And let me tell ya, this week is a good one…one of my favorites really.

Here in the South most women are usually chatty people. We like to make conversation but there is always at least one in the bunch that is a little more talkative than the rest. Wanna know what we say about her? Well, that is what today’s Southernism is about, overly chatty women!

“She gets tuckered out from her own chin music”

Yep, you talk to much that is what we are gonna say about you.

I know a few, how about you?

Overwhelmed - Today’s Southernism

February 19th, 2010

southern0051

Today’s Southernism focuses on when we get overwhelmed. It happens to the best of us…life just takes over and we aren’t sure what to do about it. Here in the South as you are finding out, we have a saying for everything…and one of our sayings when we get overwhelmed is…

“I feel like a short dog in tall grass”

In other words, there is so much around me I can’t see where to go or what to do next.

Oh, and I haven’t had any takers on the Oreo Balls yet. Seriously folks…someone has to come and take them otherwise you are going to be seeing fat burner reviews for the next year…or 4. PLEASE come and take them away. Far, Far Away.

Ahh, It ain’t no use.

February 5th, 2010

southern0055

Today’s Southernism focuses on worry. We all worry over things that are useless to worry over it but I think it is just in our nature to do so. We have a saying here in the South though that sums it up perfectly…

“Most problems ain’t no bigger than the little end of nothin’ whittled down to a fine point.”

I love when people worry over the weather…it just cracks me up because the thing that always comes to mind is I wonder what they think they can do about it. It isn’t like we can just say Stop Raining and it will. So, what needless thing to do you worry over?

You have the wrong impression

January 29th, 2010

I love doing the Friday Southernisms! I love giving out some of our favorite sayings here in the South to people that normally have no clue what we are talking about

southern0054

Today’s Southernism focuses on wrong impressions:

“You can’t tell the size of the turnips by lookin’ at their tops”

If a southern man goes to buy a car, you can bet he will have on his oldest pair of overalls and look like he couldn’t afford the junkiest car on the lot. And then he will pay in cash. I have seen it many times. You can’t judge by just what you see…because you may have just underestimated a jewel underneath.

Happy Friday Everyone!

I hope you have a fabulous weekend
