A dear friend of mine gave me a gift recently. It was one of those gifts that you never thought you wanted but wondered how you ever lived without it once you received it. No, it wasn’t anything as crazy as women’s or mens sexy lingerie. As most of you know we live in the sticks. Cable isn’t available in our neck of the woods and so, she decided that I needed Netflix.

OhMyStinkinHeck! How on earth we ever lived without Netflix I will never know. When  she gave me this gift of unlimited shows and movies at just the touch of a button my first thought was what in the heck do I need this for? After a few days I am wondering how in the heck did I ever live without it. It completely sucked me in. See, she also told me that if I had never watched the show “LOST” I should check it out because it was one of those shows that makes you think and ponder and it would be right up my ally.

So, in just a few days I am now on Season 3 of “LOST” and I think I need an intervention to tear me away from the TV so that I can actually get something accomplished besides making a dent in the couch.

When I was in high school I took many different art classes. During one of those classes we had to design a cartoon series. I drew a little country man and woman who became the center of my cartoons. Both wore overalls and both had BuckTeeth. His name was BuckTooth Bob and she was BuckTooth Betty. They wore large straw hats and overalls. BuckTooth Bob and Betty went on many different adventures during their short lives depicting many of the everyday occurrences that happen to folks that live in the country. They hunted, they farmed, and they spit tobacco. They were the epitome of what peoples perception of mountain country folk is. The last installment of BuckTooth Bob and Betty was due for a final grade near the end of my Senior year and that just happened to also coincide with some of my wildest days. So, BuckTooth Bob and Betty possibly met their demise when the local Sherriff’s Dept. raided their moonshine still and there was a big shootout.

No one ever knew if Bob and Betty were killed or made a daring escape.

Turns out Bob and Betty escaped their ordeal with the law and have been laying low for many, many years. They were discovered recently when I was cleaning out a box of old paperwork that has not been touched for many years. I am thinking they might just have to make an appearance here some day. First they have to get some things cleared up with a Maritime Lawyer (they were caught transporting some shine down the river). Then they have to get settled back into their old homestead.

The cartoon series was one of my favorite assignments during art class. I had more fun coming up with Betty and Bobs adventures and shenanigans. It was fun, put my imagination to work and tested my drawing skills. And now I am going to pass that task off to Tate. I think it is something that he will enjoy as part of his homeschool curriculum and it will be interesting to see exactly what he comes up with.

If you were going to start a cartoon series what would yours be about?

When I became a parent I couldn’t have been more blessed.  My daughter Erin has always been an easy child to raise. She wasn’t one to get in trouble at home or at school. She didn’t talk back. She was always willing to help where needed. She is smart, funny and full of compassion for others. And now, she is basically grown. She goes to college and is majoring in Engineering. She works, during the summer 2 jobs. She was just an easy child to raise.

Then, along came Tate.

It isn’t that Tate is bad. Tate is just a very different child than Erin and he requires a different type of parenting. I learned that very early on with Tate. He is curious, always wants to know how things work and why, he is very smart and he doesn’t like to be still. Those qualities do not bode well in school. When you correct the teacher and question what she is teaching, you get in trouble. When you take things apart to see what makes them work in school, you get in trouble. And he is far from being raised.

When I pulled him out of public schools to begin the journey of homeschooling I had no idea exactly what I had gotten myself or my family into…I just knew that we needed something different than the daily trips to the Principals office. It was a journey that Bric and I jumped into with both feet and our eyes closed. Not really knowing where we would end up.

My point is, parenting is hard in the best of worlds and in today’s busy world, it’s often difficult to find the time to focus on your personal relationships with your family and spouse. Now there’s a new tool that can help make parenting a little easier, strengthen marriage, and balance family life.  A tool that is working to change my family.

Family Impact is a new CD series created to help parents enhance their family life and strengthen relationships.  These insightful CDs include an array of topics such as what should never be done if you want peace in the home, effective communication no matter what your child’s personality is, why differentiating your roles helps you better understand who you are, and so much more. Created by marriage and family therapist Dr. James Jones, Family Impact can help empower moms to live a happy, healthy, balanced life. Each and every time I listen to the CD I learn something new about myself and the way that I parent.

I have a long way to go, I am in no way completed with the Family Impact series. I am half way through reading the book “Are Your Kids Driving you Nuts? How to Avoid Devastating Parenting Traps” By Dr. James Jones and I can already tell a difference in the dynamics of my family. We are becoming closer, arguing less and spending more time together. We are getting back to where we all wanted to be in the first place and for me, that is priceless.

Even though I am not finished, I truly believe that Dr. Jones series works and I can’t wait to see how much more of an Impact that it has upon my Family.

what-is-human-spark2

This is something that you will find amazing…In a new series that will air on PBS  Tomorrow Wednesday, January 6  Alan Alda will speak with researchers that believe it’s not just that your child is growing up, he finally is a human. The Human Spark is a three-part series that explores the topic of what makes us human beings – how we are different from other animals, how our brains function, and, of interest to parents – the point at which the human “spark” happens in our brains and takes us on the path of human behavior. In the series, Alan Alda takes these questions personally, visiting with dozens of scientists on three continents, and participating directly in many experiments – including the detailed examination of his own brain. You won’t want to miss this! It airs at 8 PM tomorrow. Check your local listings for PBS

We’ve all had that experience with our kids when they reach toddlerhood: you are talking to them as you have been doing since they were infants and suddenly, you realize that they comprehend you. They really understand and start communicating back! It becomes the topic of discussion for days and the one universal saying that we all use to describe it is: “My baby is growing up”. And we continue to see sparks of understanding and comprehension in every facet of their lives from that point. It is amazing to watch a child discover new and exciting bits of knowledge and skill.

So here’s the fun part: PBS has launched a “Share Your Spark” online program that will enable people to share their own “human spark” moments. This can be in the form of a video, a photo or an essay that captures what it is to be human. Perhaps it’s your child speaking on a video or a picture that is explained in a very funny way by your child. PBS will select submissions and include them as part of the series with Alda. Very cool and fun. It is great to see what others are saying so at least go check out some of the submissions!
