I was one of those kids in high school that made good grades without ever really trying. I was never really interested in being there though. But, I went and at the first moment possible, I graduated early. It just wasn’t my thing, I was more interested in the party scene at the time than making a future for myself. Right out of high school I went to college, majoring in Business Marketing and Management. I quickly found out that it took a little more studying time than I was used to. Then, my Dad got sick and I dropped out to help with his care, only liking about a year to get my degree. I wasn’t really appreciative of my time at college though. I was really only there because it was what I thought I was supposed to do. After my Dad had a liver transplant and was on the mend, I decided to go back to college. I was at a different place in my life by that time and took things a little more seriously. But, I didn’t go finish my degree. Instead I chose to go a totally different route and went to school to become an EMT. While I loved my job as a medic it is a very strenuous career. It is hard mentally, physically and emotionally. There came a time when I just knew that my time as a medic was over.

Every since, I have thought about going back to school. Getting a degree, or just taking some classes that interested me. Why? Well, something I have learned about myself is that I love learning. When my friend Beth started college last year I was a little envious…but why the heck can’t I go myself? There is no good reason! And what better time to make that decision than the start of this New Year? I can’t think of one. This is the time of year that we all start reflecting on how to make improvements to ourselves. We re-assess our goals and strive a little harder. We make resolutions such as going back to school, getting a better job, learning a new skill, taking a class, or picking up a hobby. I have tried hobbies. I am just not good at them. As a matter of fact, I have been told by different people on different occasions to give thoughts of sewing, crocheting, kitting, etc up.

So, I am researching going back to college. Online. Because really, if I had to actually get up and get ready in the morning, it wouldn’t happen. But, I can happily sit in the comfort of my home, in my pajamas and go to school. Check out Ivy Bridge CollegeIvy Bridge College (IBC) is committed to Moms, 50% of their students are Mothers as a matter of fact.

· IBC offers flexibility and convenience with the ability for Moms to earn their degree while they continue to work or while they stay at home to raise their children.

· IBC offers support services including a free online private community dedicated to students who are Moms where they can connect with and support other student Moms.

· Some of the other great support services IBC offers are:

○ Dedicated weekly success coaching which includes career planning, resumé writing and interviewing skills

○ Free tutoring

○ Personalized academic advising and guided pathways to earning an accredited college degree

○ Ability to earn a college degree in as little as 17 months IBC is designed for students to earn their associate’s degree and then seamlessly transfer to over 150 “name brand” partner schools, including Arizona State University, the University of Maryland, Pace University, Pepperdine University, Rutgers University, George Mason University, among others.

· After earning an associate’s degree many students choose to pursue a 4-year degree, but transferring from other two-year schools can be a very complicated process. Students often waste credits, time and money on courses that ultimately won’t transfer. Ivy Bridge College solves this problem by establishing clearly articulated transfer agreements with each of their partner schools to eliminate this headache. They have mapped out success paths so their students aren’t wasting time or money. To see all of IBC’s partner schools, click here: http://ivybridge.tiffin.edu/transfer-programs/partneruniversities

· IBC costs less than 1/3 of what it costs to attend other private schools (as per the College Board)

· People who hold an associate’s degree on average earn 20% more and those with a bachelor’s earn 65% more than those with only a high school diploma. And I think we are all going to need hope at a higher income very soon.

So, to help one lucky reader attain their goal of a higher education, and to help off-set some of the cost associated with achieving that goal, Ivy Bridge would like to offer a $1,000 tuition discount for one of you!!!

It’s Back to School we go. Many of you have already sent your kids off to school, some of us are still getting ready. I remember growing up and being all excited about the first day back. Making sure my clothes were just right, excited to wear a new pair of shoes, all those new school supplies tucked away in my brand new backpack. But as a parent, I have always felt differently. I mean DANG, it is expensive getting kids ready for that first day back, and add in all the supplies that the teachers now ask you to send it is even worse.

Then, I was hit with the college years. OhMyGoodness. I was kinda blind-sided by that one. I mean, Yes, I knew it was expensive, but WOW, I was still not prepared. Tuition, Textbooks, Parking Pass, Student Fees, Food, Laundry Supplies, Cleaning Supplies, Dorm Gear. It was like paying for school, and renting an apartment that had to be furnished and maintaining 2 households all in one!

And the thing about trying to get a kid ready for college…you just don’t think about all the little things they are going to need. It never dawned on me that she would need cleaning supplies. I did think about the laundry supplies thank goodness. But stuff to clean with? Nope, went right out the window with all my other common sense as I was trying to prepare myself for all that empty-nest stuff.

But this year…Sam’s Club is here to help with their Back to Class bundles!!

The Complete Idiots Guide VS For Dummies

We have all seen them. Orange or Yellow? The Complete Idiot’s Guide or the For Dummies? Pepsi or Coke? McDonald’s or Burger King? Windows or Mac?

These well-known brands have gone head to head for many years to see which products consumers prefer. And I have been comparing the two books to see which I prefer.  You may be familiar with both the bright orange covered how-to idiot’s guides books as well as the yellow dummies, but have you ever compared them?

The Complete Idiots Guide To Calculus

We took on the challenge by comparing the guides for Chemistry and Calculus. Whew, deep subjects, both of which I am an Idiot or Dummy in, whichever way you want to lean. But, Tate is taking both subjects…and there are times that I have to help. (insert a LARGE sigh and eyeroll here). I have to say, both guides are great in their own right. Let’s Compare:

The Complete Idiots Guide: LOVE how the definitions, Critical Points and Kelly’s Cautions are in boxes and are clearly pointed out. Kelly’s Cautions were REALLY helpful in cautioning against commonly made mistakes. I also really like the “You’ve Got Problems”. They helped to give something to work out and teach you as well as giving the answer to check yourself to make sure you got it right. The comics provided a good laugh needed when dealing with such deep subjects. The Glossary was helpful for quickly finding definitions. The one downfall was that there was no index.

For Dummies: Provides good tips, comics, and I loved that it had an index to quickly find and refer to the material you are studying. It doesn’t have a glossary and the tips sometimes blend into other material and isn’t clearly pointed out. I did like the “Top Things to Remember”.

Both Guides are pretty good but I leaned more using the Idiots Guides and would have used them exclusively if there had been an index. The Idiots Guides did seem to flow smoother for me and were easier to navigate. Comparing these turned out to be a much bigger task that I anticipated. I knew I Math was not my best subject but WHOA, I found out just where my shortcomings are. I did learn a lot and was able to help Tate in a much better way thanks to the guides because without them…I am lost.

I do think that the Complete Idiots Guides are a great addition to typical school curriculum and have been a fabulous addition to our homeschooling curriculum. Erin also used the Calculus to help her with her college homework. And there are so many subjects that you could find The Complete Idiots Guide to most anything that you want to learn about. Check them out when you get time, you won’t be sorry you did!

Twas the night before school started, when all through the town, the parents were cheering… It was a riotous sound! By 8, kids were washed and tucked into bed… Where memories of homework filled them with dread! New pencils, new folders, new notebooks too! New teachers, new friends…Their anxiety grew! The parents just giggled when they learned of this fright-and shouted upstairs: Go To Bed! It’s A School Night!!

Happy New School Year

Tomorrow is the first day of school here locally. Of course since I homeschool Tate, we have been back for awhile, but the public schools head to class tomorrow. We have a full-load this year including American History, Chemistry and Calculus. I have no idea how all this Calculus mess is going to go, it all looks like a foreign subject to me but at least Tate has some kinda clue what is going on and needs little help from me. Our goal is for him to take the SAT next year and then take some college classes next fall. He will only be 15 then and I am just hoping it was the right decision to make.

I remember when my kids first went to school. What a bittersweet day. I hated to see them head into that big school on that very first day but I was thrilled that they were going to have their minds opened and expanded. I love to read and was so excited when they were learning, we could then have the biggest adventures through books each and every night.
