Beatin On The Devil
March 12th, 2010
Well now, it’s Friday again! That means another great Southern sayin from the vault of Southernisms:
“You’re beatin the devil round the stump”
Basically, that means quit beatin round the bush and get to the point already!
Or, someone is being evasive and not getting to the point of a matter.
My husband, not a Southern native, still has a hard time with some of the things that we are saying…and he has lived here for many years now. It cracks me up when we are in a social situation and I see that blank look come across his face. I immediately know that someone has said something that he can’t understand or that makes no sense to him. Today’s Southernism is one that used to confuse him. Of course the way that you read it and the way that it is said is 2 different things. It is said as: Yabeatinthadevlrounthastump
Yep, all run together. And unless you have a degree in Southern speech it is sometimes hard to translate things. Aren’ t you glad I don’t type like I talk??
Well, I am offa here. Gotta call me sister to see if she got herself one of those new tv stands for her nice big TV and to see what time her and the girls might be here today. They are coming to hang out and see what all we can get in too….
Whatta Mouth! (Southernism)
February 26th, 2010
Ain’t ya’ll been lookin forward to this all week??
And let me tell ya, this week is a good one…one of my favorites really.
Here in the South most women are usually chatty people. We like to make conversation but there is always at least one in the bunch that is a little more talkative than the rest. Wanna know what we say about her? Well, that is what today’s Southernism is about, overly chatty women!
“She gets tuckered out from her own chin music”
Yep, you talk to much that is what we are gonna say about you.
I know a few, how about you?
Overwhelmed - Today’s Southernism
February 19th, 2010
Today’s Southernism focuses on when we get overwhelmed. It happens to the best of us…life just takes over and we aren’t sure what to do about it. Here in the South as you are finding out, we have a saying for everything…and one of our sayings when we get overwhelmed is…
“I feel like a short dog in tall grass”
In other words, there is so much around me I can’t see where to go or what to do next.
Oh, and I haven’t had any takers on the Oreo Balls yet. Seriously folks…someone has to come and take them otherwise you are going to be seeing fat burner reviews for the next year…or 4. PLEASE come and take them away. Far, Far Away.
Golly That’s Ugly
February 12th, 2010
Today’s Southernism focuses on Unattractiveness. I have heard many sayings throughout the years but my favorite has to be:
“He’s so ugly, his Mama took him everywhere so she wouldn’t have to kiss him good-bye.”
That folks is pretty daw-gone ugly.
It is FRIDAY!!! We are supposed to go to the circus tonight…however they are also calling for a snow storm. Yeah, a snow storm that looks like it will only hit the deep South. How insanely crazy is that? And they are saying that we may get anywhere from 2-5 inches of snow. That means that there will be no milk or bread left within a thousand mile radius and everything will be shut down for days. We don’t do snow well at all.
I hope that you each have a FABULOUS weekend…mine is going to be busy and exciting. Tell you all about it later!
Ahh, It ain’t no use.
February 5th, 2010
Today’s Southernism focuses on worry. We all worry over things that are useless to worry over it but I think it is just in our nature to do so. We have a saying here in the South though that sums it up perfectly…
“Most problems ain’t no bigger than the little end of nothin’ whittled down to a fine point.”
I love when people worry over the weather…it just cracks me up because the thing that always comes to mind is I wonder what they think they can do about it. It isn’t like we can just say Stop Raining and it will. So, what needless thing to do you worry over?
You have the wrong impression
January 29th, 2010I love doing the Friday Southernisms! I love giving out some of our favorite sayings here in the South to people that normally have no clue what we are talking about

Today’s Southernism focuses on wrong impressions:
“You can’t tell the size of the turnips by lookin’ at their tops”
If a southern man goes to buy a car, you can bet he will have on his oldest pair of overalls and look like he couldn’t afford the junkiest car on the lot. And then he will pay in cash. I have seen it many times. You can’t judge by just what you see…because you may have just underestimated a jewel underneath.
Happy Friday Everyone!
I hope you have a fabulous weekend
Southernism Of The Week
January 8th, 2010
Today is Friday (Thank God!) and it is COLD here in the South.
This weeks Southernism is about consequences:
Don’t Let your mouth write checks that your rear can’t cash.
Ohhh, we have all been there at one time or another. I am an expert at consequences, I used to get myself into all kinds of situations and learned early on that if I wasn’t willing to accept those consequences to keep my mouth shut and my rear end at home. Usually, I was willing to accept the consequences though. Or is it that I have never been able to keep my mouth shut?
Tell me about a time when your mouth wrote a check to big for your rear to cash…and I will tell you one of mine.I will leave it in the comments on Sunday evening.
Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!
Ya’ll come back now ya hear
