southern grace

It has been awhile since I brought you a Southernism…and this one fits perfectly! See, I have been so busy lately that you can’t even see the end of my list with a pair of binoculars and it doesn’t look like things are going to slow down anytime soon. Now in some ways that is a good thing, in others, not so much.

So, when people call me or e-mail me asking for my help on something I am having to say:

“I’ll do it if nothin’ breaks or comes untwisted.”

Basically, that is a yes but it also leaves a little wiggle room in case you need to bow out.

I feel like the white rabbit on Alice in Wonderland. Running around in a frantic only able to say….

“I’m late / I’m late / For a very important date.”

I am not even sure what the important date is…I just know I am late. So, today I am getting caught up on all the behind the scenes, in front of the scenes and beside the scenes stuff I have been putting off. I have been saying for a week I am going to finish painting that blasted bathroom…well, I tried but I ran out of paint. Seriously folks…it has already taken a whole gallon to paint that bathroom and I am not finished. Blahhhh, I am sick of it too. It is the bane of my existence. I do have all the dishes caught up and most of the laundry. That within itself is a miracle…one probably never to be seen again until the next century. Now I am working on checking out some online schools for Tate. Cooking supper. Catching up on some posts I am behind on (so, you might see several on here tonight…be warned). Trying to get my e-mails cleaned out. Returning phone calls. Making a grocery list. Among whatever else crosses my mind and distracts me from all the other stuff I said I was going to do to begin with.

I’m late / I’m late / For a very important date. / No time to say “Hello.” / Goodbye. / I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.

Sometimes in life I am totally clueless about what is going on around me. My excuse is always that I am so busy that I don’t have time to notice but the cold hard truth is that I just don’t pay close attention. There is an old saying that ignorance is bliss and while that saying it so true in my case most days it could be better said that:

“Not only do you not know nothin’, but you don’t even suspect nothin’”

I like living in my own little world, clueless about what’s going on. It suits my purposes well. It isn’t that I am a dimwit, it’s just that I don’t have time to pay attentionĀ  to a lot of non-sense. You know, stuff like the fact that I need to check out some Lipovox, or that my floor has needed to be mopped for over a week (please don’t tell anyone that). I do pay attention to what matters though. Like when my best friend needs me to call just to say Hi because she is having a bad day.

It’s all about priorities.

Heat in the South is different from heat in the North. People that aren’t from around here don’t really get that until they come for a visit in July or August.

Then, they get it…and they truly understand.

See, it is HUMID. It is a heavy, smothering heat. And it is here early this year.

I was in the grocery store earlier this week and there were a couple of older men in line in front of me. I wasn’t trying to be nosy but I couldn’t help but hear their conversation. It went something like this:

Man#1: “Shore is hot”

Man # 2: “Yeah tis”

Man # 1: “Gotta garden a goin this year?”

Man # 2: “Naw, its too hot this year for me ta get out thar much.”

Man # 1: “Yeah, bought make ya so sluggish that ya was born tired and raised lazy.”

I think that about says it all. Hope you have a great day and an even better weekend!
