Yes, I know. I have been Missing in Action lately. But I have some really good excuses. Seriously.

For the last several weeks I have been down in my back. I have degenerative disc disease and it seems that this time I have done something that seems to be lingering. There is nothing worse than back pain. Going to the chiropractor, ice, advil and anything else that I can do is being done. It does seem to be getting some better but I will be so glad when I get back to par. And if that doesn’t happen soon someone is going to have to pack me up, ship me back to my maker and leave Shipsmart testimonials. Because I am tired of feeling under the weather. Sitting is the worst part of it all and writing posts requires sitting.

Also, Bric lost his job. We keep hearing about how much better the economy is…but we sure aren’t seeing it. As a matter of fact unemployment went UP by 8% here in a month. That isn’t improvement folks! But, we live in one of those small communities that is run by the good ole’ boys and if they are ok then all is ok. I will be more than happy to vote this time around and hope like heck we see some changes.

Then, we were given a HUGE gift that required lots of work on our part.It was worth every minute!! Of course I say WE loosely. Bric and Tate did most of the work along with a few really great friends.

Clear trees

First “we” had to clear some trees.

pull up pavers

Then “we” had to pull up all the pavers we had down that served as a patio.

bobcat

Next, the land had to be completely level. I begged to drive but the man that did the work wasn’t too sure about that. He decided he might better take care of things himself. I was just appalled that he didn’t trust me.

rebar

“We” even learned how to cut rebar.

Sparks sure were flying!

sand

Then came the sand!!

spread the sand

They are a Motley Crew.

install the liner

Next, the liner had to be installed. It took lots of people. And several attempts to get it right.

exhaustion

Exhaustion set in.

fill with water

Fill with water!!

OMG it's cold

OHHHHMyStinkinHeck it’s COLD!!!

Play

Let it sit in the sun a few days…

…and then PLAY!

Yep, we were given an 18′ X 33′ Pool thanks to one of my dearest friends. She felt like we needed a little something to brighten our day…little doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Also, while all of this other had been going on Erin got to come in to visit for a week!!! And while she was here I just couldn’t bring myself to be on the computer much.

So see, We have had a little going on but I am trying to get myself caught up…

we will just have to see if it happens. Till then, I have a float calling my name.

Recently there has been a wave of phone calls into my house. They start out with an innocent “Hey Aunt Jyl, how are you?” Then comes the “What are you doing?” then that leads up to the “Can we come over, we are bored”.

It cracks me up that bored college kids think I have so much to offer in the way of entertainment. I personally think I am as boring as barcode scanners but they think of my house more like Six Flags, only with better food.

Then I found out that it really isn’t me. It’s a game that we have:

They come to play Just Dance 2. And provide me with entertainment.

If you are like me you are constantly on the lookout for fun new games that your whole family will enjoy. We love the classics but sometimes we want something new and fresh from our usual. With the new line of Hasbro card games we can have both! And talk about fun, we have had a blast playing three of the new 2010 games that came out this Spring and are highly anticipating the release of the fourth this Fall. Many nights you will find us involved in a card or board game, it is what we love to do. We don’t really have an official Family Game Night since we actually celebrate it several times a week. However, we did join in the National Family Game Night last year and we plan to join in on the 2010 Family Game night.  The date for 2010 will be Wednesday, September 29 when once again, Hasbro will encourage families across the U.S. to turn off the television and take a break from busy schedules to laugh and bond over classic family board games such as MONOPOLY, SORRY! and THE GAME OF LIFE.

kids playing cards

According to a recent Hasbro survey, 42% of Americans said that they’ve laughed so hard when playing a board game that they’ve snorted! And 25% of Americans have even celebrated a big win with a flashy victory dance. Have you had any laugh out loud moments when playing games? Feel free to post your favorite moments on their Facebook page.

Hasbro has introduced a new line of card games that take a spin on traditional game for the second year in a row. By transforming the board games of SORRY!, YAHTZEE and TRIVIAL PURSUIT into “snackable” play formats and by adding the classic French racecar card game of MILLE BORNES to the line, Hasbro card games provide lasting entertainment whether on the go or for family game night.

Fort Mountain Beach

The Beach and Pagoda at Fort Mountain

One of our favorite outings during the summer months is to the lake. We have 2 locally, one is Carters Lake and one is atop Fort Mountain. Both have a beach area that attracts locals, both have great picnic areas. And both are tons of fun. Fort Mountain is a state park, Carters Lake is owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Fort Mountain being a State Park offers free admission on Wednesdays making it a super affordable fun day! I am not sure about all State Parks, but I do know that even if they do not offer a free admission day they are still super affordable charging a typical fee of about $4 to park no matter how many people are in your car. And with a picnic lunch, you have a very affordable mini-vacation that isn’t far from home but provides hours of fun.  I know this state park also offer hiking trails, camping spots and many other great opportunities to spend some quality time with your family, I am sure yours does too…it just takes a little checking into.

Carters Lake is a much larger lake and offers even more opportunities for a great family day (and it is even closer to me, making it our first choice). They have a beach, a marina, some really great picnic areas, hiking and bike riding trails, prime fishing spots, many boat ramps, a visitors center and a really great playground area on top of the dam. You can even rent pavilions for parties and family get-togethers. Ok, so yes, the real reason that we prefer Carter’s is because we can ski and tube..and I get to see some of my best friends since that is where they always go to camp. And, it also is a very affordable way to spend a summer day at $4 per car.

The back-drop ain’t bad either.

Just make sure that you pack some sunscreen and protection for your lips as well. We always carry along Softlips. The wind and sun can be so harsh and I would much rather prevent than have to repair so I make everyone lather up with the sunscreen and paint on some Softlips because it has SPF!

But I hope that you will check out the local parks in your area. I am sure that you will find tons of things to do as a family to provide both a Wonderful Summer Wednesday and some affordable fun for all!

I would love to have you join me every Wednesday in posting fun and affordable activities, events, crafts, recipes, toys and ideas. To join in the fun simply check back each Wednesday and link your Wonderful Summer Wednesday post up in the Mr.Linky! And even if you don’t blog check out what some of these other great families/bloggers are doing, you never know…you just might find some really great things to do with your family.
