As most of you know my son is homeschooled. Some people think that makes us crazy, other think we should get trophies for it. Most days…I go along with the thoughts that we are crazy. Ok, not really…it’s only the math part that makes me feel that way.

We have tried MANY math curriculum’s and I wish we could say that we had found the perfect one. But heck…lets be honest. It’s Math. There is no perfect one. I did find the perfect tutor though. And he is FREE!!!

I actually kinda like math, but found out I am not the best teacher of math. I don’t know why it works a certain way…it just does. And that frustrates Tate. He wants to know the how and why.Me, I really don’t care why or want to spend hours analyzing it. I just want the answer and I can’t always explain how I know that is the answer, I just know that it is.

Then I found the Khan Academy. Sal (I am calling him by his first name because he is now my best friend…even if he doesn’t know it), started doing videos to help tutor his niece. That is how the Khan Academy started. He has done so many tutorials on so many different subjects (not only Math) that there is something to help just about everyone…even in Calculus. And he has made them all available for anyone to use…free of charge. He is seriously my hero.

I also love the finance section!! That is next on out list. I am going to have Erin go through that section as well since she will soon be getting married and be out on her own.

If you homeschool or are in a math class yourself you should seriously check out the Khan Academy. Best thing since sliced bread!!

rubik's cubeThe Rubik’s Cube celebrates its 30th birthday this year. That means 30 year of frustration, then learning how to cheat the cube by taking the stickers off and re-applying them to make it look as if you had solved the puzzle. I remember when they first came out (yep, showing my age here) and begging for one. I had to have it. Then I remember staying awake late at night for hours on end trying to figure out how to solve it. I never did learn how without cheating in some way but my cousin could solve one in just minutes. That used to make me so mad at him. Now that I am older and wiser, I can solve it without cheating. Ok, so I had a little help in the way of a pamphlet called You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube.

you can do the rubik's cube logo

Now, there is a whole new “You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube” program (www.YouCanDoTheCube.com). It is designed to get youth engaged in math and science in a fun way with lesson plans built around the Cube help kids learn about problem-solving, teamwork, and other math disciplines like area, perimeter, volume, angles, and algorithms. Who knew that the Rubik’s Cube could teach so much? What a great teaching tool that makes learning tons of fun!!

There are competitions where individuals and teams can compete to win some really neat prizes. Educators and Communities can even host their own competitions and possibly even get them sponsored through the You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube site.

And if you just want to have fun…you should think about a Rubik’s Cube Party! Everyone can dress in solid colors that match the colors on the cube. You can even make a cake that looks like a Rubik’s Cube:

So sorry but most of my photos from the party are blurry, I think it was because I couldn’t quit laughing. SO I really only have one decent one of Tate being surprised that he was actually able to solve the Rubik’s Cube. I think he had a little coaching from his sister along the way though:

Since it’s release in 1980, the Rubik’s Cube has found its way into over 350 million homes and has continued to fascinate, bewilder and challenge millions of people. Today schools, camps, summer programs, parents and others are finding out just how beneficial the cube can be to teaching  important math concepts. The new You CAN Do The Cube initiative is a US Campaign aimed at teaching a new generation how to solve the Rubik’s Cube and experience the many benefits of this accomplishment. So visit You CAN Do The Cube and learn how to solve it for yourself. Teach someone else how to solve it. Print out a Certificate while you are there saying that you can. Throw a party. Just have FUN!

It is more important now than ever before to get a good education and grades play the biggest factor in determining your chances of getting into a good college or getting a good job. Erin secured a job this summer because of how hard she worked during the school year at college, keeping her grades up and being determined to be the best that she can be. Part of the application process for her job was to send in a copy of her college transcripts and that was a big factor in who they chose for the positions that they had available. We thought that she was going to need some Online Tutor help for one of her classes, but in the end she pulled it off.  Did you know that you can get Free Online Tutoring? You can! So if you or one of your children needs a little help in one of their classes you should definitely look into it.

This year I know that I am going to have to get some Math help for Tate. He is at that age where it just keeps getting harder and harder…and Algebra is the worst for me. A Math Tutor may be the way for us to go. He has expressed an interest in going back to public schools but I am just not ready to take that step. Homeschooling vs. Public Schooling is a very controversial topic and is a very personal decision for every family, the reason we made that decision is very different from others and the reason it works for us is also very different. But this year, we are going to have to have some help like a Math Problem Solver.

I have talked to many other families that homeschool and many of them have stated that they use some sort of Online Math Tutor. Apparently it is the subject that most people need help with. If you are looking for a tutor service for yourself or your child you will want to choose a tutor service that provides high-quality one-on-one service. One that supplements education for all grade levels,  from K-12 to college students, that way you have your bases covered for years to come. You also want it to be affordable and available for when you or your child NEEDS it, not during a pre-scheduled time that may not be convenient for you.  Choosing Math Tutors Online is becoming a much more common practice these days. The curriculum for students is getting harder and more complex and if you are anything like me…most of it you have never even seen before, much less able to provide help with.

Who knew Math was going to get so hard? And why in the heck didn’t you tell me??? As a Homeschool Mom I think I am going to have to figure out a different approach to Math. Cause it is HARD. There are all those Algebra problems that I have no idea how to help with.

I did  Algebra in High School and in College. No, I have never been a Math whiz but I thought I could at least help Tate with Solving algebra problems in his Math curriculum this year. Boy was I wrong. I think math has gotten significantly harder in the past 20 years. Or maybe it is relative to age. I have been getting Erin to help out when she is home since she is in Calculus I figure she has to know a heck of a lot more about it than I do.

I have been searching for help on How to do algebra problems on the Internet. Wow there is a lot of stuff to filter through using that search. It is amazing all that we can now find online. I think next year I am just going to use an online school for Tate, in math at least. I just see no way that I can personally prepare him for doing College Algebra Problems when I can’t even provide him with Algebra Homework Help now. The Pre Algebra Homework Help wasn’t that big of a deal but I think we are at that place where we need an Algebra Tutor. I found TutorVista an online tutoring company. They offer an incredible unlimited monthly tutoring package for a very cheap price and for all subjects – students can use their service as much as they want, whenever they need it. Tutoring is available 24X7. I wonder if they would just move in with us for about 3 or 4 years.

Algebra has become my nemesis. I haven’t yet decided if I want to kill it or conquer it. Killing it is looking mighty good lately and conquering seems highly over-rated.
