My dogs are more than just pets to us. They are a huge part of our family. They entertain us. They comfort us. They love us unconditionally. Mine bring a smile to my face on a daily basis. They give us cuddles and kisses. For some folks, this is hard to understand, for others they get it completely.

They seem to have an extra sense about them that we as humans don't get. Mine know when I am sad, stressed or feeling under the weather. They offer up extra attention and comfort in times of need. While none of mine are “therapy dogs” there are those that provide unconditional love, love given that can help people with illnesses or in need of certain therapy. Many are trained to help people with disabilities. Many are trained to detect life-threatening diseases. Many are trained to simply visit with humans that need a little comfort and reassurance.

I have a friend whose dog kept licking her arm in a certain place. Over and over again. She eventually went to the doctor and they found skin cancer in the exact place that her dog kept licking. I have another friend who has a daughter who had to have a heart transplant and was given a dog that stays constantly by her child's side and watches over that child on a daily basis. As you see, dogs can be so much more than just a pet.

Chuka and Roxie

In December of 2011 a new guy came into my life. He was a cute little ball of fur.

As we were trying to decide on a name for him I mentioned that he looked like an Ewok. So, we looked up names of Ewok’s and decided upon Chuka. As Chuka grew…so did his mischievous nature.

This is just one of the many, many messes that I would walk in on. It was worse than a 2 year old. I couldn’t turn my head for a minute or I would find some mess or another.

And then he would look at me with those big eyes, huge ears and sweet, sweet face.

I fell in love with him over and over again, day after day.

Then, he would do something else. Nothing was safe.

Even with a comb-over he is too cute for words.

Chuka loves to sit at the table

He found his place at our table, in our lives and in our hearts.

But ohhhh goodness, I loved it when he would sleep.

That meant I knew he wasn’t getting into something.

He definitely has made our lives interesting, our hearts grow and keeps us on our toes.

Golly I love the little guy.

Anyway, all that to say…Chuka’s Birthday is TOMORROW!!

I can’t believe he is going to be a year old. Today, he is going in for a spa day. He is getting his hair trimmed, his nails cut, and who knows what all else. But you can bet you will get to see his new haircut tomorrow on Facebook as we celebrate his big day!!

Wedding are a huge event no matter where you live. Picking out the perfect dress, the best location, the right flowers, the perfect salon for those wedding updos. And getting the right spouse. There is a saying that we use when we see a couple that might have come from different social standings…

“He was raised on firebread and soppin’ gravy. She was raised on ham and eggs.”

Today’s standards are very different than when my grandparents and parents grew up and this is a saying that isn’t heard near as much as it was years ago. It is one of those Southernisms that is dying out and will probably be extinct before long.
