Jyl's Deals Logo

Most folks who know me, know that I am about as frugal as they come. I love a good deal and I love to stockpile items that I get a good deal on. Because of that I get a lot of phone calls from friends and family asking me what the good deals are for that week. They want to know what I am going to be buying. And that is how this post came about. This is not a couponing site. I won’t be matching up all the deals for all the stores for you, there are TONS of sites that already do that, and they are easy to find. This is strictly what I will be buying, where I will get it and where I got the coupon to make the deal happen. So, welcome to Jyl’s Deals!

These are the deals that I will be getting the week of February 10th, 2013. Yes, I go to multiple stores. When there is a good stock up price I buy as many of those items as I have coupons for. Before you go to the store KNOW that stores coupon policy. If they are out of an item make sure to get a raincheck. There are many, many tips for couponing, but with a little organization and pre-planning you can get some really good deals. Let’s get started:

Bi-Lo is one of my favorite places to shop. You can stack a manufacturers coupon and a competitor coupon for some really great deals. They double coupons up to .60¢ and when they have a Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale you get each item at half price, which means you can use 2 coupons!  Their ad does change on Wed, so make sure to swing by before then.

I first saw this recipe floating around on Pinterest. If you aren’t sure what Pinterest is don’t try to find out. It is the most addictive site I have ever been on in my life. If you do try to find out what Pinterest is about or are already an addict make sure to add me! I am there under Jyl Nipper. It sucks you in worse than welding supplies and won’t let you go. Before you know it hours have passed and you have lots of new projects to work on.

Anyway….

…back to homemade butterfingers. Butterfingers happen to be one of my favorite candies. I was a little unsure about trying this recipe, afraid I would be disappointed and dejected. Boy Howdy was I ever wrong. I like them as much if not better. These are not hard in the center like a store bought Butterfinger and they have a wonderful taste! And, only 3 ingredients!!

homemade butterfinger ingredients

Peanut Butter, Candy Corn and Chocolate Coating (I used chocolate flavored Almond Bark but you can use whatever)

candy corn

Place the candy corn in a microwavable safe bowl.

Microwave the candy corn on high for about a minute. Then microwave in 30 second intervals until it is completely melted.

Oh, and ya might want to stir in between.

melted candy corn

It is going to come out being a big orange liquidy substance.

butterfinger base

Stir in the peanut butter.

It kinda looks like a blog of mess at this point but we are getting to the good part so just hang in there.

pour into pan

Pour mixture into an 8 X 8 pan lined with parchment paper.

Let it cool and harden.

cut into squares

Lift the parchment paper out and then cut into squares.

chocolate candy coating

While your butterfinger mix is cooling you can be melting the chocolate.

I don’t have a double boiler so I just make do with what I have.

This glass bowl fits perfectly on one of my smaller stock pots making it an instant double boiler.

homemade butterfingers

AS you can see there is no right or wrong way to dip them. Some of ours are completely covered, some only half covered.

We like em either way.

WARNING!!!!!

These are addictive.

Very, very addictive.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Homemade Butterfingers

1 lb. candy corn
16oz jar peanut butter
16oz pkg. chocolate candy coating

Melt candy corn in microwave on high 1 minute. Stir and continue cooking in 30-second intervals til melted, stirring after each interval. Stir in peanut butter. Spread mixture in an 8×8 pan lined with parchment. Cool completely. Cut into squares. Dip in melted chocolate candy coating. Lay on waxed paper to set.

My husband Bric comes from a different land. It is known most commonly as San Diego California but I refer to it as that foreign land from which he hails. When he moved here it took him awhile to get adjusted to Southern Cuisine. He told me he didn’t like Meatloaf. Well, that is now one of his favorite meals. As we went through meal time after meal time he found that he loves southern foods and actually prefers most of what we cook to his previous foods. However, there are a few things that he begged me to learn how to make. Things that his Mom made him that he missed. Once I decided that I would keep him awhile I started asking his Mom for a few recipes of his favorite things. This is one of them, I had never heard of Olive Balls. And just wasn’t sure I would like them at all but they are Bric’s favorite and have become an all-around family favorite. He only gets them at Christmas though…you will soon understand why.

Olive Ball Ingredients

You are going to need 1 can of squirt cheese. The bacon flavored kind is the best but it is really hard to find so just grab whatever ya can. 1 Tablespoon of butter. 1 dash of Worcestershire sauce, 1 dash of hot sauce, 1 cup of flour, and lots of olives.

squirt cheese

Squirt your whole can of cheese into a bowl. Mine kind of exploded a little and I made a bit of a mess.

It’s all good though.

dash of hot sauce

Add in a dash of hot sauce.

Now, I get asked all the time how much a dash is. That totally depends on you.

My dash is about 5 or 6 shakes. Yours might be 3-4 or 7-8.

dash of worchestershire

Add in a dash of Worcestershire sauce.

butter

Add in the 1 Tablespoon of really softened butter and mix well.

add cup of flour

Now add in the cup of flour. I have never known if it was self-rising or all-purpose flour so I have always used self-rising.

soft dough

Mix everything up really well until it forms a soft dough.

pinch of dough

Pinch off a SMALL piece of dough.

This is actually still to large a piece of dough and I had to divide it in half.

Flattened dough

Flatten it out really good in the palm of your hand.

Did I mention that your hands are going to be all in this stuff?

Yeah, you might want to go wash them really good.

olive in dough

Place one olive in the middle

roll olive in dough

Roll the olive up in the dough

completely wrapped in dough

Make sure it is completely enclosed in the dough.

This is what takes the longest. When my Mother-In-Law e-mailed me this recipe her exact words were “Good luck, it takes a good while to wrap these little hummers”. And it does. I typically tell Bric that I will make them if he will roll them. Well, today he got out of that job since he got called into work. Merry Christmas Bric!

place on a cookie sheet

Place them on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

I always check mine and when the bottoms get just a little brown they are done.

olive balls

Done! Mine are a little more done that I typically like but I got side-tracked for a few minutes and they cooked a little longer than I intended. Don’t get me wrong, they are still great, just a little more done than I like.

Did you see that big jar of olives I had?

olives

This is all that is left.

Now, the problem here is what to do with them…make another batch or eat the remains.

I opted for eating the remains.

:0)

Olive Balls

1 TBSP softened butter

1 can of squirt cheese (cheddar bacon cheese is optimal)

1 dash of hot sauce

1 dash of Worcestershire sauce

1 cup of flour

lots of olives

Directions: Empty the can of squirt cheese in a bowl. Add the sauces and butter. Mix well. Add in the cup of flour and mix until it forms a soft dough.

Pinch off a small amount of dough and flatten, then wrap around an olive, sealing it as best you can.

Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
