Ruby Falls

Have you ever been to Ruby Falls?

Located over 1120 feet beneath the surface, Ruby Falls is the nation’s largest and deepest waterfall open to the public. Hundreds of gallons of water rush over by the minute and amaze visitors. It is an -awe-inspiring site. I can remember going with my family as a child, but this visit was different. I saw and appreciated the beauty in a different way than before. Tate and I have studied many different cave and cavern formations, been on a caving trip and love studying about rocks, geology, and the formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

Stalactites at Ruby Falls

Back in 1928 when Ruby Falls founder Leo Lambert had the idea of opening a cave as a tourist attraction, tourism as we know it today was in its infancy.  Little did he know that his “roadside attraction” would soon be a must see for families from all over the world.

Ruby Falls History

It started out as a dream to open the caves he played in as a child to the public, to showcase natures underground beauty to all who wished to see. But as they were excavating to install an elevator for the public to descend into the caves, he suddenly hit a pocket of air. Curious as he was, he immediately crawled in the 2 ft by 4 ft opening and explored for hours on end. Then suddenly, he hit the end of the opening and found this:

Ruby Falls

After being in the previously unexplored cave for 17 hours he finally emerged, telling everyone of the beauty he had found. Then, taking his wife Ruby with him, he christened the water fall Ruby, after his precious wife. There is so much more to the story, fascinating tidbits that you will love hearing, but you have to take the tour to get the whole story. Located on Lookout Mountain, in Chattanooga Tennessee, Ruby Falls is a large sparkling waterfall located deep inside one of the most significant mountains in the Southeastern United States.  The approach to the waterfall is almost as awe inspiring as the waterfall itself.  This subterranean trail contains a plethora of beautiful rock formations.  Countless stalactites and stalagmites which took millions of years in the making appear in unusual and impressive forms throughout the tour.

A friendly and knowledgeable tour guide greets you at the elevator when the tour begins and shares many interesting and unusual facts about the cavern, the waterfall, and the Chattanooga area as well.  The guide will point out many unusual and whimsically named formations such as the “Dragon’s Foot” and the “Totem Pole” and lead the group through specialized portions of the cave such as the “Twilight Zone” and “Weight Watchers Lane”.

If you love to take pictures I warn you that you will need to be quick…and try to stay at the back of your group to give yourself a few more minutes. You can catch up quickly, the tour moves at a pretty slow pace but doesn’t linger at all the wonders you are going to want pictures of.

Tate at Ruby Falls

Tate offered to hold the top of the cave up for us.

My strong man!!

Ruby Falls

We had a great time with our guide Johnathan. It was not only a great family outing but was educational and interesting as well. You can learn more about Ruby Falls by visiting their website at www.rubyfalls.com. AND, just in time for the Halloween season, Ruby Falls offers a Haunted Cavern event. This is not recommended for any child under the age of 10. Click on their special events to learn more about the Haunted Caverns, but remember…when you are that far underground…no one can hear your screams!

We also visited Rock City, which I will be telling you about in a later post and the ZipStream zip line and ropes course, all in the same day. We had plenty of time to do all the activities and didn’t feel rushed at all. So if you are considering a visit to Lookout Mountain just know that you can do all the attractions in one day or you can split them up, whichever you prefer.

They’re Coming To Take Me Away Hehe!

It is all on account of this:

Snow 2011

It has been here for 5 days. It is time for it to leave.

Our driveway is shaped like a big U. You have to go down a hill and then up a hill to get in or out. Add snow and ice to it and it becomes impossible to enter or leave. So, I have been stuck for 5 days. Now, a couple of days, that isn’t so bad…but at this point I am going stir crazy!

Normally my days are pretty quiet. Most of what I do work wise is via internet/email and once we are done with homeschooling, it is very quiet at my house. Not so much when everyone is home, bored and going just as stir crazy as I am. I am the type of person that can go on a 5 hour car-ride and be content not to say a word. Bric is quiet and contemplative. I am quiet and contemplative…ok, so unless I am riled up about something….then I am loud and obnoxious. But what I am getting at is I am tired of being in this house and I need some quiet. Some time when I hear no noise at all. No TV’s, No video-games, No one talking.

So, I am bound and determined that I am going to make it out of here today! Not sure where I am going. Not sure what I am going to do. But I am going! The temperature is going to get above freezing which means that some of this mess is going to thaw, hopefully quicker that you can hunt down some of the best acetyl l carnitine and the minute I can I am getting the heck out of dodge for a bit!

Tah, Tah! I am either bound for town or the ditch. We shall just have to see which but I am willing to take a chance. All for sanity’s sake.

When I was in high school I took many different art classes. During one of those classes we had to design a cartoon series. I drew a little country man and woman who became the center of my cartoons. Both wore overalls and both had BuckTeeth. His name was BuckTooth Bob and she was BuckTooth Betty. They wore large straw hats and overalls. BuckTooth Bob and Betty went on many different adventures during their short lives depicting many of the everyday occurrences that happen to folks that live in the country. They hunted, they farmed, and they spit tobacco. They were the epitome of what peoples perception of mountain country folk is. The last installment of BuckTooth Bob and Betty was due for a final grade near the end of my Senior year and that just happened to also coincide with some of my wildest days. So, BuckTooth Bob and Betty possibly met their demise when the local Sherriff’s Dept. raided their moonshine still and there was a big shootout.

No one ever knew if Bob and Betty were killed or made a daring escape.

Turns out Bob and Betty escaped their ordeal with the law and have been laying low for many, many years. They were discovered recently when I was cleaning out a box of old paperwork that has not been touched for many years. I am thinking they might just have to make an appearance here some day. First they have to get some things cleared up with a Maritime Lawyer (they were caught transporting some shine down the river). Then they have to get settled back into their old homestead.

The cartoon series was one of my favorite assignments during art class. I had more fun coming up with Betty and Bobs adventures and shenanigans. It was fun, put my imagination to work and tested my drawing skills. And now I am going to pass that task off to Tate. I think it is something that he will enjoy as part of his homeschool curriculum and it will be interesting to see exactly what he comes up with.

If you were going to start a cartoon series what would yours be about?

I LOVE to sit down and read a good book. It has long been a passion of mine and one that I had hoped to pass on to the kids. The only one who shares my passion is Tate. When he was little you could find him under the covers late at night with a flashlight reading his little heart out. He was always so afraid he would get caught being up past betime. I always let him think he was getting away with something, because that is afterall part of the thrill.

When my family was asked to review the Literati wireless electronic reader we couldn’t have been more thrilled. I knew before it arrived that this would be one item that Tate and I would be fighting over…and I was right. One of the great things about it is that we can both be reading a book, and it will hold our place while the other one has it. I am not sure what I did but I have lost one book…inside the electronic reader. Yep, that’s me. Technologically challenged.

Tate is the one who actually read all of the instructions and did the majority of the set-up process. As I watched I realized just how user friendly the Literati is and how we should have invested in an electronic reader a long time ago. I wasn’t sure just how much we would use one, but now I realize that this is one device that we will never leave home without again. Great for car trips, waiting in offices or lines, or just relaxing around the house with a good book. And now we need another one. It is a fight every noght to see who is going to get the Literati at bed time because both Tate and I love to read at night. With the lighted/color display reading at night is easier than ever and I don’t keep Bric up with a light on or the sound of pages turning.
