When my daughter married and expanded our family to include Matt, I knew that he played the guitar, I just had no idea to what extent. Anytime I have asked what I could get him as a gift for this occasion or that, he would tell me ohhh, anything to go with my guitar.

If you ever need anything guitar related, here is the guitar site for you! They have about everything you can imagine. As I was talking to Erin to see how the decorating their new apartment was coming along, this is the picture that I received:

I wish I had the patience to learn to play. I love nothing better than to be sitting around in the evening, hanging out with friends and family listen to some of them pickin and grinnin. Add in some good home-cooked food and it is the perfect gathering. My uncle who plays once told me that my fingers were too short to play guitar. I actually think it had more to do with the fact that he didn’t have the patience to deal with me. I was quite the cracker jack when I was younger and could never seem to sit still, be quiet or pay attention for any period of time. Then, if I ever got to giggling….well, you could just forget it, because every time he would tell me to hush and pay attention I would just giggle harder.

Do you play the guitar or any other instrument? I am jealous of those that have that talent. Heck, I just wish I could carry a tune.

playing the guitar

Yesterday I went up to a little town in the Northeast part of the mountains of Georgia called Hiawassee to spend time with family and friends at the Carter Camp. For those of you that are regulars around here you have heard mention of Carter Camp and it’s owners from time to time…my Aunt Ruth, a great cook, and my Uncle Clinton, a great musician. Even as a little girl I knew I was amidst good people when I would be in the presence of Clinton and Ruth. It was always about filling people to the brim for them. When you would walk away your stomach would be filled with some of the best food not only meant to fill your stomach but also made with so much love that it filled your heart as well and the music  would fill your soul. You would be full to the brim.

As you can see from the mass amounts of food, if you walked away hungry it was no one’s fault but your own.

Oh and just look at all the sweet stuff!

Aunt Ruth and Coconut Cake

This is my Aunt Ruth and her famous coconut cake. I went to go get me a piece and it was GONE! not even a crumb was left…I ended up having to steal a bite off of my Mother’s plate when she wasn’t looking. Shhh, don’t tell her.

Ruth’s coconut cake is one of her most requested recipes.

Last year Ruth’s daughter and daughter-in-law spent most of the year compiling some of Ruth’s recipes into a cookbook. This cookbook is no ordinary cookbook though, it is also the story of her life. “From the Garden to the Table” tells how Ruth grows and gathers from her garden and brings it to the table. What doesn’t go on the table right then is canned for use later on when the gardens have long gone.

When I received a cookbook earlier this year I just knew I had to get one for you. See, many of my recipes have some basis on what Ruth has taught me over the years. I will never forget calling Ruth late one evening, hoping she wasn’t already in the bed to get her to talk me through how to fry chicken. Her fried chicken recipe is the one that I continue to use today. This summer I went to her house to learn to make chow-chow, a southern favorite that usually accompanies a big ol’ pot of beans and cornbread. I used her recipe to make peach preserves and pickles this year. She is my go-to anytime I need a recipe or want to know how to do something in the kitchen. And I want to share that with you.

It is my solemn vow to get these tomatoes finished today. Seriously. I am going to get completely done. At least until the next batch comes through the door. I hope to concentrate the rest of this week on a different vegetable. This week I want to make pickles. Lots and lots of pickles. Whole ones, spears, chips, dill, sweet, bread and butter, cubes. In other words, all of them. Now I just have to get the cucumbers.

The thing is, I could get a lot more done if I could stay off of the computer. But I think of something I need to look up so I come look it up and the next thing I know 30 minutes are gone. Then I will think of something I needed to research, like how to buy musical instruments and another hour is gone. Then I have to check my e-mail, and my facebook, and my twitter. And well, I just end up staying in front of the computer for most of the day.

Oh, you wanted to know why I wanted to know how to buy musical instruments. Well, I have decided I want to learn how to play the guitar. I have really always wanted to learn to play. I want to sit by a bonfire, roast marshmallows and play the guitar and invite everyone over that I know. Bric says I just need to stick to cooking for everyone that I know, that they would be much happier that way. Phooey on him is what I say!

Guitar Hero for the Nintendo DS has taken over our house. It is a fight for play time on a daily basis here. Everyone LOVES it! The game comes with an attachment that you hook to your DS that has the “keys” and a “guitar pick”. It is SOOO much fun.

The makers of Guitar Hero introduced Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits for the Nintendo DS system, a follow-up to the On Tour and Decades games previously released. The game features 28 songs, all radio-edits of modern rock hits from bands including Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, The Strokes and Wolfmother. Besides being able to take the game on the road, the Nintendo DS has a wireless feature that allows song streaming and multiplayer modes. Imagine all of the kids in the backseat of your car entertaining themselves and challenging each other!
