Have you ever been to a corn maze? Oh my goodness, it is a must do activity for your family. We had the BEST time at Uncle Shucks Corn Maze this past weekend.

past mazes

When we arrived we met up with the owner, Mike, and got a glimpse at past mazes and learned all about the history of Uncle Shucks.

The mazes are A-MAZE-ing!

It is something else to see the precision in the mazes, and to learn how they are designed and then cut into the corn.

I had no idea that there is a company that helps with designs and then travels all over the country cutting out corn mazes each year. So even if you don’t live close enough to visit Uncle Shucks, you can probably find one in your area to visit. They are really Corn-tastic!

2012 corn maze at Uncle Shucks

This is the 2012 maze at Uncle Shucks. You see all the little swirls? Yeah…I think I visited EVERY ONE of them!

It was really corn-fusing.

don't get corn-fused

I LOVE all their signs.

And make sure to watch out for the Corn Cops! They can help you along the way.

Yes, I know…I am a little Corn-y.

I just can’t seem to help myself.

instructions

And even though we got instructions, were showed how to read the map and given pointers…we still got lost. Several times.

it all looks the same

I mean really, it all begins to look the same. Every turn and twist looks like the last, and it is hard to figure out which path to take. Bric eventually figured it all out and led us to each checkpoint and we made it out. WoooHooo!! He is such a great navigator!

The great thing about Uncle Shucks is that there are different mazes, each having 6 checkpoints and one having a Clue type game. After we did the first maze, got all 6 checkpoints IN ORDER, we went and sat at a picnic table and had a cold drink and a snack. Then we went back and finished the second part. I wish we had taken a picnic with us because it was so much fun watching all the folks there having a great day with family and friends. Shooting the corn cannon, picking out pumpkins, taking the hay ride, feeding the goats, the little ones making their way through the soybean maze, etc.

And if you go at night, they have a bonfire where you can sit and meet folks from all over, have a cup of hot chocolate, roast marshmallows and if you are really brave…you can attempt the haunted maze. The haunted maze is the pumpkin shaped part in the picture of the maze. I hear it is Scream-Tastic!

We spent about 3 hours on our trip, but when we go again, we will be staying for all the evening activities. And we will be going again! You can spend anywhere from 30 minutes up to several hours, it is really all up to you.

Located in the beautiful Dawsonville, GA it is really easy to find. You can get directions, prices, and more information about Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Farm by visiting their website at: http://www.uncleshucks.com/

Ruby Falls

Have you ever been to Ruby Falls?

Located over 1120 feet beneath the surface, Ruby Falls is the nation’s largest and deepest waterfall open to the public. Hundreds of gallons of water rush over by the minute and amaze visitors. It is an -awe-inspiring site. I can remember going with my family as a child, but this visit was different. I saw and appreciated the beauty in a different way than before. Tate and I have studied many different cave and cavern formations, been on a caving trip and love studying about rocks, geology, and the formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

Stalactites at Ruby Falls

Back in 1928 when Ruby Falls founder Leo Lambert had the idea of opening a cave as a tourist attraction, tourism as we know it today was in its infancy.  Little did he know that his “roadside attraction” would soon be a must see for families from all over the world.

Ruby Falls History

It started out as a dream to open the caves he played in as a child to the public, to showcase natures underground beauty to all who wished to see. But as they were excavating to install an elevator for the public to descend into the caves, he suddenly hit a pocket of air. Curious as he was, he immediately crawled in the 2 ft by 4 ft opening and explored for hours on end. Then suddenly, he hit the end of the opening and found this:

Ruby Falls

After being in the previously unexplored cave for 17 hours he finally emerged, telling everyone of the beauty he had found. Then, taking his wife Ruby with him, he christened the water fall Ruby, after his precious wife. There is so much more to the story, fascinating tidbits that you will love hearing, but you have to take the tour to get the whole story. Located on Lookout Mountain, in Chattanooga Tennessee, Ruby Falls is a large sparkling waterfall located deep inside one of the most significant mountains in the Southeastern United States.  The approach to the waterfall is almost as awe inspiring as the waterfall itself.  This subterranean trail contains a plethora of beautiful rock formations.  Countless stalactites and stalagmites which took millions of years in the making appear in unusual and impressive forms throughout the tour.

A friendly and knowledgeable tour guide greets you at the elevator when the tour begins and shares many interesting and unusual facts about the cavern, the waterfall, and the Chattanooga area as well.  The guide will point out many unusual and whimsically named formations such as the “Dragon’s Foot” and the “Totem Pole” and lead the group through specialized portions of the cave such as the “Twilight Zone” and “Weight Watchers Lane”.

If you love to take pictures I warn you that you will need to be quick…and try to stay at the back of your group to give yourself a few more minutes. You can catch up quickly, the tour moves at a pretty slow pace but doesn’t linger at all the wonders you are going to want pictures of.

Tate offered to hold the top of the cave up for us.

My strong man!!

Ruby Falls

We had a great time with our guide Johnathan. It was not only a great family outing but was educational and interesting as well. You can learn more about Ruby Falls by visiting their website at www.rubyfalls.com. AND, just in time for the Halloween season, Ruby Falls offers a Haunted Cavern event. This is not recommended for any child under the age of 10. Click on their special events to learn more about the Haunted Caverns, but remember…when you are that far underground…no one can hear your screams!

We also visited Rock City, which I will be telling you about in a later post and the ZipStream zip line and ropes course, all in the same day. We had plenty of time to do all the activities and didn’t feel rushed at all. So if you are considering a visit to Lookout Mountain just know that you can do all the attractions in one day or you can split them up, whichever you prefer.

Here at The Post-It Place we are in full-fall-swing. Gearing up for all the fall festivals, trips to the apple house and preparing for Halloween!! So in preparation for Halloween, what is more fitting that spooks and haunts?

13 Stories Haunted House Logo

One of our recent adventures was to the 13 Stories Haunted House located in Kennesaw GA, located behind the Town Center Mall. The whole way there I kept telling my family that I hope it was scary, and I was hoping it wasn’t too scary. Yeah, makes a lot of sense…NOT. But that is the way I felt. Anxious and excited we arrived, found our destination and then went to eat. They do not open their doors until dark so we had a little time to spare. As we sat down to eat I couldn’t help but think that eating before hand might not be the best idea.

Once dark hit we headed back to the 13 Stories Haunted House location and I prepared myself for the haunts that awaited. But first, let me tell you a little about the history of 13 Stories. As a young’un Allyn Glover was bored. See, he grew up in a small town much like where I live…with nothing to do. So I can just imagine that one night around the dinner table as he and his sister were complaining about being bored his parents telling them to figure out something to entertain themselves. That is when the idea came about to start a hayride, down a haunted trail. They implemented their idea, made it all come to life and now 28 years later they have one of the best haunted houses around. People come from all over to visit the original site located in Newnan, GA and the newer site in Kennesaw GA. As we were waiting our turn to go in I got to visit with Allyn’s Mom and Sister and several of the staff, talk about a great bunch of folks. One of the things that impressed me the most was how everyone of the staff talked about how they are all a big family, and that they all return year after year after year to work at the Haunted House. And you can tell…they have a LOT of fun!

Ogre at 13 Stories Haunted House

As you wait for your turn you will see some of their “crowd pleasers” wandering around. They are happy to stop and pose for pictures with you if you are brave enough to ask. I just hope we are all smiling this much when we come out…that is if we survive! And yes, the big Ogre is “alive”. The Zombie, well, he is “dead”. Undead that is.

I can’t spoil how it goes once you enter. I mean really what fun would it be if you knew what awaited at every corner? I can tell you it is worth it! I can tell you that one person in our group pee’d their pants. I can tell you that it wasn’t me but it almost happened to me as well. See, they stuck me up front. My heart got quite the cardio workout. And then when I saw this…

…I wanted to curl up in the corner and suck my thumb and forget where I was at for a moment or two. If you get inside and are not sure you can make it all the way through, they have “chicken doors”. There were 3 times that I would have been happy to use a chicken door. I am so glad that I didn’t and that I made it all the way through. I HIGHLY recommend that you visit 13 Stories Haunted House!! Then you will know at exactly which 3 points I wanted to chicken out.

Zombie at 13 Stories Haunted House

When you see this guy. Run! He wants to eat your brains. He is quite the gentleman though, he even says please.

Imp at 13 Stories Haunted House

And this Imp, he is an Imp! Always up to some mischief and mayhem.

Grim Reaper at 13 Stories Haunted House

And then the Grim Reaper came to visit me.

I am still wondering if I really made it out alive,

or maybe I just think I am still alive.

I have been hearing about 13 Stories Haunted House for years and I knew it was something that we wanted to do this year and something that I wanted to tell all of you about. It really is a fabulous attraction to visit. We were not disappointed at all. If you are interested in visiting 13 Stories Haunted House you can see the dates, times and even get a coupon by visiting their website. You can follow along by liking their Facebook Fan Page and follow them on Twitter.

Some people have asked me is it really scary? Yes, and I am not sure that this will make sense but it was just scary enough…not too scary and not too little scary. Yeah, told you it wasn’t going to make sense, but it does in my mind, and well, we all know what a scary jumbled place that is. And in full-disclosure I want to say that I contacted 13 Stories Haunted House about us visiting, they welcomed us with open arms. So while we did receive tickets, all of the opinions stated are those of my own and were in no way influenced by anyone or anything.

Much of the south experienced devastating storms yesterday and last night. Normally I do not get too concerned over storm warning but yesterday I was downright scared. I had a bag packed and was ready to go if needed. Turns out we did go to a friends house who has a basement and luckily we are all ok with no damage other than some limbs. Many were not so lucky. My dear friend Beth and her family lost everything. Their house, their vehicle…everything but the clothes on their backs.

storm damage

This is what is left. A pile of rubble. It took all of 1 minute and everything was gone. Several of my other friends have had major damage, many are without power and there were even many lives lost. My heart goes out to everyone.

Today I have spent the day looking for a generator for my friend Mike, putting together some care packages for Beth and her family as well as some other folks that lost everything, and thanking God that none of us were hurt instead of menial things like looking for management jobs.

I have set up a fund for anyone that would like to donate to Beth, her 3 children and husband. Every dollar counts when you have absolutely nothing. I have already sent some money her way so that they can get a change of clothes and some food in their bellies. If you would like to donate you can do so by clicking here:

And it is my hope that you , your family and friends all survived ok!
