Nothing drives me crazier than my house smelling. And with 2 kids, a husband and 3 dogs it happens. Household odors make it seem like the house is dirty…and every time we are having company over I make everyone in my family go outside then come back in to make sure it smells ok before company arrives. Then I make them do it again just to be sure. It just one of my many pet peeves, I can’t help it.

So how can you control odors in your home and have a healthier and cleaner environment? Try Filtrete Odor Reduction Filters!

You can also try some of these tips from healthy living expert Lisa Beres
Healthy living expert, Building Biologist and author Lisa Beres shares simple solutions to
naturally create and maintain a fresh home:
Source: Kitchen refrigerator
Solution: Forgotten leftovers can cause a foul odor in your fridge. Clean the fridge
drawers and shelves by adding a few drops of natural dish soap to a bowl of baking soda
and stir until it creates a thick paste. This will remove odors as well as stains left behind
from food. Also store an open box of baking soda inside the fridge to help eliminate
odors before they start, and replace it with a fresh box at least every three months.

Source: Pests and repellants
Solution: Pesky ants and other insects can make their way into your kitchen pantry when
they’re on a mission to find food, but dousing them and your kitchen’s surfaces in toxic
repellent isn’t a healthy solution for the home or the family. Instead, set a line of coffee
grinds, lemon juice, cinnamon or cayenne pepper around doors and windows to create an
effective barrier they won’t cross.

Source: Cooking
Solution: Prevent unappealing cooking odors, such as fish, from spreading and lingering
throughout the entire home by upgrading to the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter. It traps
odors and gases from the air passing through the filter and helps keep the home fresh for
families and houseguests. Synthetic air fresheners, candles and incense only provide
temporary relief from odors by masking them in one particular room but will do nothing
to remove the odors from the entire home.

Source: Damp towels
Solution: Wet towels from a shower, a trip to the gym or a day at the pool can be a
breeding ground for mildew to develop if they sit too long without drying. To rid towels
of the mildew smell, first wash them once in hot water with a cup or two of white vinegar.
Then wash them again with a natural or eco-friendly laundry detergent. Finally, dry the
towels in the dryer on high heat. To avoid mildew and associated smells in the future,
hang towels up right away to ensure they dry thoroughly.

Source: Pet odors
Solution: Furry companions are considered family members to many — 72 percent of
American households today own either a dog or a cat1. Reduce the unpleasant smell of
pet dander by bathing and grooming your pet weekly and establishing pet-free zones in
the home, such as the bedroom.

Source: Candles and air fresheners
Solution: Instead of trying to mask the odors with store-bought air fresheners, create
your own air freshener by combining 10 drops of an essential oil — such as lavender or
eucalyptus — with two cups of water. Many air fresheners may sway you with the scents
of fresh cut grass, warm vanilla or tropical fruits, but they can contain synthetic
chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which can irritate eyes, skin and throats2.

All great tips, my favorite being for towels. We are constantly washing towels it seems like and inevitably there is always a wet one that gets forgotten under a pile of laundry. Drives me nuts!!! And then my whole house smells like mildew. Yuck! Luckily the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter is effective at removing household odors and can handle all my family throws at it. Does anyone in your family suffer from allergies? How do you manage them? The Filtrete Odor Reduction filter also helps reduce airborne allergens from the air passing through the filter, such as household dust, pollen, dust mite debris and mold spores. Making your home not only smell better but a cleaner and healthier place to live. I also love the fact that our local grocery store carries them and I don’t have to drive to another town and one of the big box stores to find them. Here is how they work:

The Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter features carbon web technology that combines tiny pores of activated
carbon with electrostatically charged fibers to help trap odors and gases from the air passing through the
filter. It is the most effective3 odor-reduction filter at removing odors in the home, such as those from
cooking, tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals.
The Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter also help maintain airflow in heating and cooling systems, which may
help prevent stress on the system and reduce the amount of energy needed to reach desired indoor air
temperatures. Other electrostatically charged filters with similar ratings are tightly woven and may restrict
airflow in the heating and cooling system. This may cause the system to work harder and run longer.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends changing the filter every three months4.
An easy way to remember to change your filter is to do so at the start of ever season.
Product Benefits:
• 65 times more effective than other carbon filters at removing odors, such as those from cooking,
tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals.
• Starts to remove even the strongest odors in minutes, after the furnace fan is turned on
• Captures large airborne allergens such as household dust, pollen, mold spores and dust mite debris
• Captures microscopic particles such as smoke, pet dander and smog
• Last up to three months for odor removal and particle capture for air passing through the filter

Our water here is less than desirable. Sometimes it smells funny. Sometimes it tastes funny. And sometimes we have both the weird smell and taste at the same time. I shudder to think what is in our water so normally we use the filtered water out of the refrigerator. That can get frustrating and we have talked many times about installing a purifier on our sink or getting a pitcher. But how do you choose? There are so many on the market these days that it makes it difficult. In comes the ZeroWater Pitcher!

ZeroWater Pitcher

I like the look of it. It isn’t too large or too small, fits perfectly in the refrigerator, and wow, does the water ever taste good! It has a built in TDS meter, which helps put a number on what your taste buds already tell you about what’s in water. The higher the reading on the water, the more things dissolved in water. It shows the total number of detectable dissolved solids. You can even see what the reading in your area are by visiting their website at: http://www.zerowater.com/

Want to know more? You can find ZeroWater on Facebook. By visiting  http://shopping2.zerowater.com/10cuppitcher.aspx and using coupon code MC30, you will receive a 30% off of a 10 Cup ZeroWater pitcher

Do you have trouble drinking water straight out of the tap? I just can’t do it. I have tried but it is just one of those things for me. Kinda like how some people can eat almost anything for breakfast. Not me, it has to be breakfast food. No pizza, no left-overs from the night before. I have to have breakfast food. Yep, I am weird like that.

Because of my aversion to tap water all of my water comes out of the refrigerator door, it is where I get the water to make tea, it is where I fill water bottles, it is where I fill up a glass just to drink, even my dogs water comes from the fridge door. Yes, I know that comes from the same place as the tap water but at least it is filtered.  We have a Maytag side-by-side that has a built in Whirlpool water filter. Most fridges come with the built in water filter feature these days and most utilize the Whirlpool filters Why? Because they are great! They have saved us tons of money by using the filtered water and not buying bottled water which can not only get expensive but are bad for the environment.  It has been a such a great convenience and one I would hate to live without.

I need to drink more water.

I think the majority of us can say that but don’t do much about it. I have been working on increasing my water intake little by little for awhile now but I don’t like to drink it straight from the tap. To me it tastes funny and it smells funny so we would always buy bottled water to drink and that gets expensive.

Zuvo Logo

I was recently asked to check out the new Zuzo Water Filtration System. OhMyStinkinHeck! This is one sweet system! The Zuvo is a new, easy to use, eco friendly device. It’s state of the art and elegantly designed.  The Zuvo is telegenic and visually fascinating to watch, once it’s plugged in you see the water bubbling in a blue UV light and getting cleaner before your very eyes. It is super easy to install too! Make sure that if you have a faucet that pulls out you grab a installation kit for that. We have a pull out faucet in the kitchen and it doesn’t come with the installation kit and no one locally carried what I told them I needed. So for the time being ours is installed on our bathroom faucet. Otherwise the Zuvo has everything that you will need for a basic installation on a regular faucet.

The Zuvo uses a 5-step process to clean your water:

Step 1: Ozonation

In nature, ozone is generated by lightning and cleans the air where rainwater forms. The Zuvo Water Purator mixes ozone with incoming tap water to treat taste and odor contaminants and improve taste. Like chlorine, ozone is a powerful oxidizer. Unlike chlorine, ozone leaves no chemical residue.

 Step 2: Ultraviolet Light

The ozone saturated water is flooded with high-intensity UV light – the same as the solar energy that cleans water in the upper atmosphere.

Step 3: Photo-oxidation

The Zuvo Water Purator combines UV and ozone in a patented process known as photo-oxidation which releases powerful oxidizers to further treat the water.

Step 4: filtration with lead removal

Pure spring water is created by passing through fine particles in the earth. Zuvo uses the same principle by passing water through a Class 1 Particulate Reduction Filter, reducing chlorine taste and odor, lead, and tiny particulates.

Step 5: post-filtration UV

The filtered water is again exposed to high-intensity UV light as it leaves the Zuvo Water Purator, ensuring that you get clean, healthy, great tasting water…just the way nature intended!

It comes out tasting clean and refreshing. Much better than my tap has in years! With the safety of drinking water on everyone’s minds these days and Congressional hearings on bottled waters ongoing, the new Zuvo Purator offers a solution to the question of how we can get the cleanest drinking water to improve our fitness and health and at the same time save our planet. The Zuvo Water Purator will revolutionize the way you think about easy to use home water filtration systems. It’s ecologically friendly and elegantly designed and has been awarded the Parent Tested Parent Approved Award for best new green products, recommended by the Cooking Clubs of America and is on track for the Good Housekeeping Seal too. Zuvo also eliminates the need for expensive and eco-unfriendly plastic bottled waters, in fact if the water we use at home cost what even cheap bottled water costs our monthly water bills would run about $9000.00.

So, great tasting water. Healthier for you. Better for the environment….all at a lower cost. That’s a winner in my book!
