Algebra And Me

January 10th, 2010

math6

Who knew Math was going to get so hard? And why in the heck didn’t you tell me??? As a Homeschool Mom I think I am going to have to figure out a different approach to Math. Cause it is HARD. There are all those Algebra problems that I have no idea how to help with.

I did  Algebra in High School and in College. No, I have never been a Math whiz but I thought I could at least help Tate with Solving algebra problems in his Math curriculum this year. Boy was I wrong. I think math has gotten significantly harder in the past 20 years. Or maybe it is relative to age. I have been getting Erin to help out when she is home since she is in Calculus I figure she has to know a heck of a lot more about it than I do.

I have been searching for help on How to do algebra problems on the Internet. Wow there is a lot of stuff to filter through using that search. It is amazing all that we can now find online. I think next year I am just going to use an online school for Tate, in math at least. I just see no way that I can personally prepare him for doing College Algebra Problems when I can’t even provide him with Algebra Homework Help now. The Pre Algebra Homework Help wasn’t that big of a deal but I think we are at that place where we need an Algebra Tutor. I found TutorVista an online tutoring company. They offer an incredible unlimited monthly tutoring package for a very cheap price and for all subjects - students can use their service as much as they want, whenever they need it. Tutoring is available 24X7. I wonder if they would just move in with us for about 3 or 4 years.

Algebra has become my nemesis. I haven’t yet decided if I want to kill it or conquer it. Killing it is looking mighty good lately and conquering seems highly over-rated.

To New Adventures

December 17th, 2009

This has been such an exciting week for me. I have had lots of new projects on the burner and they are almost done cooking. There are a couple that I just can’t discuss just yet, but information will be coming VERY soon. I have spent so many hours at my computer over the last few days that I think I am going to need that lasik surgery Mexico has to offer. One I can tell you about is that I have started working for a company called Wool Street Publishing. I am handling their online marketing approach concerning bloggers and other social media aspects. They have written and illustrated a precious board book for children ages 2-6. Flip Along Fun is a new mix and match board book that tells a story, teaches numbers and counting and helps understand sequencing. It contains nine “pages” comprised of three panels. The panels are mixed and matched to tell a story by matching the numbers and/or the pictures on each panel. The child selects randomly to arrange the first two panels then they have to find the correct panel to complete the storybook page by adding the numbers or matching the characters.
The Flip Along Fun book encourages learning by incorporating a fun game-style format into traditional reading and arithmetic! It helps children develop cognitive skills such as:

* Structuring sentences
* Matching
* Rhyming
* Adding
* Logical thinking

You really have to visit their website at www.flipalongfun.com and watch the video. You will fall in love with this new approach to learning and your children will have so much fun they won’t realize that it is educational.

Rosetta Stone

This Christmas give the gift of language. Being able to speak more than one language is such an accomplishment and can help young ones to go much further in college and life. It can help adults further their careers. There are so many people that can benefit from learning a second language and Rosetta Stone can help.They teach based on a completely immersive environment so there isn’t so much memorization involved and you can learn at your own pace instead of taking a class and having to try to keep up.

feature-set-hs-catalog

As a child, you learned to speak instinctively by experiencing the world around you. Their solution recreates this experience through a fully immersive environment right on your computer.

No translation or memorization. They have eliminated the traditional approach of using translation and grammar rules, empowering you to think in your new language. There are no flash cards, dictionaries or memorization drills.

A carefully designed sequence of activities. By surrounding you with words, images and the voices of native speakers, the Rosetta Stone method lets you progress naturally from words and phrases to sentences and conversations.

Rosetta Stone has made learning a second language not only educational but fun. For these reasons they have been the leading language software for years. I love their efforts to preserve endangered languages and to help revitalize them. What an amazing thing! They have been used by the Military, Nasa and many other corporations.

So, if you are looking for an educational gift this year, how about the gift of a second language? Check out Rosetta Stone.

Rosetta Stone provided me with a 30 day trial in order to write this post. Opinions are my own.

Hugg-A-Planet

October 27th, 2009

huggaplanet_2074_5054355

Have you ever wanted to just reach out and hug the moon? Peace Toys has created a line of huggable planets that is both fun and educational. As I have said before, we love geography here. We love studying about other places, how they live, their demographics, etc.  With Hugg-A-Planet Earth we have had a “ball” tossing it around to see what new place we can find to study about with is geographic accuracy. Hugg-A-Planet has also created Mars and the Moon. All of the products in their line of huggable toys feature a soft-huggable planet and accurate maps of the planet they feature. You can learn from them, you can play with them, and you can cuddle with them. These are a great tool to teach our children to be aware of their planet,  increase their global awareness, and geographic knowledge.

huggaplanet_2074_8793083

The Hugg-A-Planet Product line was aboard the first Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) rocket to the International Space Station (ISS), the Sept. 11 launch and Sept. 18th docking was flawless. This award-winning product line brings the universal appeal of these fun and educational products to earth orbit. Whether in space or back home here on planet Earth, Hugg-A-Planets are for everyone.

Often used as a simple conversation piece for some, an educational resource for teachers, and for others just for a simple embrace. Now the Hugg-A-Planet® Earth, Hugg-A-MoonTM and Hugg-A-Planet® Mars will circle the Earth for many years to come. The Hugg-A-Planets will make a full orbit around the Earth every 90 minutes on the Space Station. They will stay there for as long as the space station remains active, at least till 2016, and will orbit the Earth 5860 times every year! NASA chose the Hugg-A-Planet globes peacetoys.com as a space-based teaching tool because of their geographic accuracy and soft construction. They also can be tossed around like a ball or used as a pillow.

Hugg-A-Planets were voted as one of Parents Choice Foundation “Best 25 Toys of the Past 25 Years” and “Classic Toy of the Year” by Dr. Stevanne Auerbach ( “Dr. Toy” ) who said “The Hugg-A-Planet belongs in every toy box.”

Caring adults appreciate this ideal way to start children’s geographic education. Over 600 locations are labeled on the Hugg-A-Planet, including the world’s smallest nation ( Niue ). And they offer something extra … they can be hugged. Studies have shown that the majority of our personality is formed from birth to 7 yrs old. “Imagine generations growing up hugging the world. It is incredibly rewarding”, said Forenza. “I believe that people who hug the earth encourage others to care for the earth. besides, it’s a good way of promoting global awareness, sustainability, ecological consciousness and geography.”

Check out Hugg-A-Planet today and lets teach our kids to love our planet and be a little greener.

PeaceToys supplied me with some of the information contained in this post and also supplied me with a sample product for review.
