Pokemon Championships

WOW, I was AMAZED yesterday at the number of people who came to compete in the Pokemon Championships. Tate plays Pokemon, although not seriously, so I knew it was still pretty popular but I had no idea just how popular! And the Championships…what fun. Yes, it is an intense event that everyone attends in the hopes to win but Pokemon does it right. There are 2 divisions, Junior (born before 1997) and Senior (born after 1997).  There were over 300 competitors in the Junior division and over 650 competitors lined up through the room and winding up and down hallways all through the arena waiting for the Senior division to start.

Pokemon Crowd

(this doesn’t even show a quarter of the crowd waiting)

The coordinators would get them all psyched up by doing waves, getting out into the crowds speaking to different people..finding out who they are, where they are from, etc. There were some amazing stories from some of the attendees and competitors, there is no way that I can tell them all, but here are a few…

Zion at Pokemon Championships

Meet Zion. Zion’s Mom read about the Pokemon Championships in a magazine on Friday. Friday evening at 6 PM she and Zion went out and bought the specific game required for the tournament and then showed up on Saturday to give it a go. Zion placed in the top 8 at the Championships and has an invitation to attend Nationals. That is pretty amazing!

Grace - Pokemon

Young Grace and her family are HUGE Pokemon fans. They drove all the way from Chicago to attend the tournament in Atlanta. Grace, her two brothers and her Dad all compete and spend time as a family attending Pokemon events all over the country. Linda (mom) gets to do the driving while the rest of the family battle their way down the road. This moment shows the big pay-off for Grace and just how proud a Pokemon Mom Linda is:

A Winning Hug

Luke-Pokemon

Luke was the hometown favorite…hailing from Marietta GA. It was fun watching him start with hundreds of kids, moving his way up through the ranks and seeing him finish 2nd! Way to go Luke…I can’t wait to see how you do at Nationals!! That last match between Luke and Grace was intense, it went back and forth several times as we all watched with baited breath to see who the winner would be…

Grace Wins!!

In the end, Grace came out victorious over everyone in the Junior Division.

AND, in the Senior Division…

David and Glenn - Pokemon

Father and son Glenn and David Arnold from Chicago (Grace’s Dad and brother) ended up squaring off against one another in the Senior Division Finals out of more than 650 competitors. David ended up victorious over his father to claim the trophy but both will advance to the National Championships competition held at the end of the month.

Tate & CJ - Pokemon

Tate and CJ having a fun moment at the tournament.

As I said, it was a fabulously fun day. And was a free event for anyone who wanted to attend or compete. The last of the Regional Championships will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2010 in Newark, NJ if you and your family are interested in attending.

Then the Nationals will be June 25-27, 2010  in Indianapolis, IN

I wish the best of luck to all of the wonderful competitors Pokemon Trainers that I met who will be competing in Nationals!

Have you ever heard of grown men and women going out to specifically play in the mud?

That is exactly what these 4 guys think we should do.

Meet the team of the Blackfoot Mud Run. What the heck is a Mud Run? Well, a race in the mud…through obstacles and mud pits. Turns out this is a hugely popular sport. And Hicktown now has one! Who knew?? Seriously though, we get braggin’ rights. We have the only purpose built mud run facility in the country. Most of the time the coordinators of a mud run rent a field and set one up for a weekend. Ours, it is here to stay! Cause really, what goes better than mud and rednecks?

The Blackfoot Mud Run in Chatsworth GA will operate during the Spring, Summer and Fall (yeah, I don’t want to be in the cold wet mud in the middle of January either).  They will hold several races a year and will also be open to youth groups, church groups, corporate events, birthday parties, team-building events or heck, you can even rent it out if you and your buddies just want to come play in the mud.

They feature mud pits, obstacles, a swamp section, creek crossings and more. Providing lots of opportunities to get really down and really dirty. And from the first mud pit, you will be hooked. Ohhh, and talk about the view! Nestled at the foot of Fort Mountain the views make a spectacular back drop to a day of fun. The course can be as challenging or as fun as you choose to make it. With a 5 mile course and a 2 and a half mile course there are lots of options. They are even offering a child’s course for those that want to make it a family affair.

Now, check out Blackfoot Mud Run and lets go play! After all…

You can also find Black foot Mud Run on facebook to keep up with all the latest news, chatter and fun.

We spent today in a gym…full of people all dressed in white with belts of different colors.

karate-tournament-058

Tate’s color was yellow.

karate-tournament-061

It was a day of fighting. And fight well he did!

He came in second place!!

karate-tournament-025

He also competed in forms.

And came in Fourth!!

He had an awesome day.

There were many creative displays of fighting and forms to be seen during the day. I love to watch the Weapon Forms. There was one young girl that used battle fans. It was a pretty form and was just beautiful to watch. The Continuous fighting matches are INTENSE and something that I hope Tate never wants to partake in…I  imagine as he gets older he will though. He is already looking at training for Weapon Forms.

I tried to take a few picture of the trophies, but I just couldn’t get them to come out right. So, those will come on Monday hopefully. I hope that you have had a fabulous weekend so far. What did you do today?

Winners of the Braswell’s Preserves are:

First Place #56      Shreela

Second Place #5     Betsy

Congratulations to you both. I hope you enjoy!

Now, for those who have been asking. The FFA  (Future Farmers Of America) Organization hosts many contests each year. The Princess is a member and she has competed every yearof High School in the Electrical Wiring Competition among other contests, but the electrical wiring is her main focus. She plans to start college next year and will be majoring in Electrical Engineering or in Nuclear Engineering. The electrical wiring competition has opened many doors for her in many different ways. People are already seeking her out simply because she is female. But, she is smart and is really good at it. She has always been the only female at these competitions and she has always been the only competitior who wasn’t a Senior the last 3 years. This year, she raked the boys over the coals. First place wins $500, second place wins $300. On January 10th we will be going to the State Competition…First place there is awared a large scholarship. Which is what she is working towards. Graduating from Georgia Technical Institute of Technology doesn’t come cheap. Freshman year is around $20,000 alone. So, she has been applying for as many scholarships as she can and has been working hard to win as many competitions as she can. She learned to sew and sells the aprons that she makes and all of that money goes towards her education next year. I think that answers the majority of the questions, but if you have others feel free to ask!
