Nothing drives me crazier than my house smelling. And with 2 kids, a husband and 3 dogs it happens. Household odors make it seem like the house is dirty…and every time we are having company over I make everyone in my family go outside then come back in to make sure it smells ok before company arrives. Then I make them do it again just to be sure. It just one of my many pet peeves, I can’t help it.

So how can you control odors in your home and have a healthier and cleaner environment? Try Filtrete Odor Reduction Filters!

You can also try some of these tips from healthy living expert Lisa Beres
Healthy living expert, Building Biologist and author Lisa Beres shares simple solutions to
naturally create and maintain a fresh home:
Source: Kitchen refrigerator
Solution: Forgotten leftovers can cause a foul odor in your fridge. Clean the fridge
drawers and shelves by adding a few drops of natural dish soap to a bowl of baking soda
and stir until it creates a thick paste. This will remove odors as well as stains left behind
from food. Also store an open box of baking soda inside the fridge to help eliminate
odors before they start, and replace it with a fresh box at least every three months.

Source: Pests and repellants
Solution: Pesky ants and other insects can make their way into your kitchen pantry when
they’re on a mission to find food, but dousing them and your kitchen’s surfaces in toxic
repellent isn’t a healthy solution for the home or the family. Instead, set a line of coffee
grinds, lemon juice, cinnamon or cayenne pepper around doors and windows to create an
effective barrier they won’t cross.

Source: Cooking
Solution: Prevent unappealing cooking odors, such as fish, from spreading and lingering
throughout the entire home by upgrading to the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter. It traps
odors and gases from the air passing through the filter and helps keep the home fresh for
families and houseguests. Synthetic air fresheners, candles and incense only provide
temporary relief from odors by masking them in one particular room but will do nothing
to remove the odors from the entire home.

Source: Damp towels
Solution: Wet towels from a shower, a trip to the gym or a day at the pool can be a
breeding ground for mildew to develop if they sit too long without drying. To rid towels
of the mildew smell, first wash them once in hot water with a cup or two of white vinegar.
Then wash them again with a natural or eco-friendly laundry detergent. Finally, dry the
towels in the dryer on high heat. To avoid mildew and associated smells in the future,
hang towels up right away to ensure they dry thoroughly.

Source: Pet odors
Solution: Furry companions are considered family members to many — 72 percent of
American households today own either a dog or a cat1. Reduce the unpleasant smell of
pet dander by bathing and grooming your pet weekly and establishing pet-free zones in
the home, such as the bedroom.
1 The Humane Society of the United States:

http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation/facts/pet_ownership_statistics.html

Source: Candles and air fresheners
Solution: Instead of trying to mask the odors with store-bought air fresheners, create
your own air freshener by combining 10 drops of an essential oil — such as lavender or
eucalyptus — with two cups of water. Many air fresheners may sway you with the scents
of fresh cut grass, warm vanilla or tropical fruits, but they can contain synthetic
chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which can irritate eyes, skin and throats2.

All great tips, my favorite being for towels. We are constantly washing towels it seems like and inevitably there is always a wet one that gets forgotten under a pile of laundry. Drives me nuts!!! And then my whole house smells like mildew. Yuck! Luckily the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter is effective at removing household odors and can handle all my family throws at it. Does anyone in your family suffer from allergies? How do you manage them? The Filtrete Odor Reduction filter also helps reduce airborne allergens from the air passing through the filter, such as household dust, pollen, dust mite debris and mold spores. Making your home not only smell better but a cleaner and healthier place to live. I also love the fact that our local grocery store carries them and I don’t have to drive to another town and one of the big box stores to find them. Here is how they work:

The Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter features carbon web technology that combines tiny pores of activated
carbon with electrostatically charged fibers to help trap odors and gases from the air passing through the
filter. It is the most effective3 odor-reduction filter at removing odors in the home, such as those from
cooking, tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals.
The Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter also help maintain airflow in heating and cooling systems, which may
help prevent stress on the system and reduce the amount of energy needed to reach desired indoor air
temperatures. Other electrostatically charged filters with similar ratings are tightly woven and may restrict
airflow in the heating and cooling system. This may cause the system to work harder and run longer.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends changing the filter every three months4.
An easy way to remember to change your filter is to do so at the start of ever season.
Product Benefits:
• 65 times more effective than other carbon filters at removing odors, such as those from cooking,
tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals.
• Starts to remove even the strongest odors in minutes, after the furnace fan is turned on
• Captures large airborne allergens such as household dust, pollen, mold spores and dust mite debris
• Captures microscopic particles such as smoke, pet dander and smog
• Last up to three months for odor removal and particle capture for air passing through the filter

When you live in the country AND you have kids…your floor has to be mopped regularly. And when I say regularly that means usually at least once a day, sometimes twice. It just all depends on the weather and the traffic. If it is raining and we have extra kids around I have been known to crawl into bed and hide crying over the state that I know my floors are going to be in.

I have bought all the different spray mops over the years. I have quite the collection (if anyone wants one let me know) that I no longer need nor want. You see, recently I was introduced to the Rubbermaid Reveal. A revolutionary spray mop that is nothing short of FABULOUS. Here, let me tell you why:

1.) It comes with microfiber pads that do a great job cleaning my floors. AND once you are done you simply throw them in the washing machine. In other words, no more running to the store to buy replacement pads. When you live out in the boonies, this is a MAJOR plus!

2.) You can use your own cleaning solution. Anything you want. Seriously, anything. The bottle is refillable and reusable. Again, no more running to the store to buy a pre-made solution made specifically for the brand of mop you are using.

3.) It is easy to use, cost effective, cleans great, and is perfect for me and my family!

Rubbermaid Reveal

If you are very eco-conscious and always wanted to try out a spray mop, the Rubbermaid Reveal is perfect for you. Have allergies in your family and have to be careful of the products you use? The Rubbermaid Reveal is perfect for you too. I have this neurotic dog. She likes to lick the floor when I mop. Yes, I know…she has issues. We are working on them but I think it is going to take awhile. Anyway, I have always been a little concerned about what she is ingesting with some of the cleaners I have used in the past. Now, with the Rubbermaid Reveal I no longer have to worry…I know exactly what is in the cleaner because I made it myself.

When designing the Rubbermaid Reveal, we truly tried to design a mop with you in mind. With the Reveal Spray Mop, you will save money and waste less. The wide, thick microfiber pad reaches deep into cracks and crevices to pick up 50% more dirt than traditional sponge mops. The microfiber pad doesn’t just get floors cleaner; it even helps them dry faster so you can get on with your day.

Rubbermaid Reveal’s refillable bottle gives you a custom clean in no time! Just mix two tablespoons of your favorite cleaning solution with water, close the cap, and click it into the Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop. Need ideas for custom solutions? Try one of these recipes to uncover a brilliant clean with every swipe!

Rubbermaid supplied me with a Reveal to help facilitate this post, information and a Reveal for giveaway. I was in no other way compensated and all opinions stated are those of my own and were in no way influenced by any outside source or receipt of said product.

I have heard my sister talk about the Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gel for several weeks now. She ranted and raved about how I just HAD to try this new product from Scrubbing Bubbles that left a dot of cleaner on the inside of your toilet bowl rim keeping the toilet nice and clean and fresh. My thoughts were if it just leaves a dot of stuff how can it be that great. Ok, PLEASE don’t tell her that I said this…but, She was right. PLEASE , please don’t tell her. I will never hear the end of it.

You too can make toilet cleaning easier, less disgusting – and keep it clean in between with Scrubbing Bubbles® Fresh Brush™ and Toilet Cleaning Gel! This system is fabulous! Along with the Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-A-Clean system, my bathroom sparkles, smells great and is truly clean…in less than half the time it would normally take. You seriously have to try this stuff.

Scrubbing Bubbles® Fresh Brush™ is the only toilet cleaning system that’s designed for tough stains and touch-ups, while Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gel keeps toilet bowls clean and fresh in between regular deep cleanings.

Scrubbing Bubbles® Fresh Brush™ Toilet Cleaning System

Scrubbing Bubbles® Fresh Brush™ is the only toilet cleaning system with different cleaning pads to tackle both tough stains and quick touch-ups:

• The Scrubbing Bubbles® MAX pad cuts through tough stains like hard water, limescale and rust; once you’re done cleaning the pad can be thrown away.

• Scrubbing Bubbles® Flushables are great for quick cleaning and daily touch-ups and can be flushed away when finished.

• Specially designed, the curved handle lets you get into hard to reach places like under the rim of the bowl.

• The handle can be hung on the side of the tank for easy storage.

Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gel

Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gel keeps toilet bowls clean and fresh in between regular deep cleanings:

• Once a gel disc is stamped onto the toilet bowl, it clings and lasts up to seven days before dissolving away and is available in three scents: Fresh Clean, Fresh Mountain Morning, and Citrus Action

• Each time the toilet is flushed, a small amount of gel dissolves, circulates around the toilet bowl, quickly coating the surface to prevent buildup of limescale and toilet rings. With each flush, the gel releases a fresh scent.

• It is easy to use and more hygienic than traditional clip-on toilet bowl cleaners, because you don’t have to touch it when you replace it.

Availability:

Scrubbing Bubbles® products are available in the home cleaning sections of food, and mass-merchandise stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, and many more.

…my vacuum cleaner that is. And it should. That is what they are supposed to do. Mine doesn’t. Normally, I guess that would be a good thing to say about something but in this case, it just makes it sad.

We go through vacuum cleaners around here like they are a disposable commodity. With the kids, their friends, 3 dogs and living in the country I am beginning to think that there really isn’t a vacuum cleaner that can stand up to our busy lives. Oh, and the fact that they are fed a regular diet of BB’s probably doesn’t help either. And possibly legos. And maybe an army man here or there. And pieces of whatever Abigail decided to chew up that day. Ok, so around here there is no regular healthy diet of just plain dirt and dust. We don’t like traditional, what can I say.

My vacuum decided to  finally die yesterday. It sighed and heaved, said “So Long you abusive heathens” and promptly started smoking and spitting sparks at us. The dogs ran and hid, afraid that after all the abuse they had imparted upon said vacuum that they were going to be the main target of revenge.

Now I am left wondering how we are ever going to survive with out our dearly departed friend. And when on earth I am ever going to make the trek to the big town to get another and what in the world I am going to get this time. I always seem to choose wrong. I just hope that while I am gone the dogs do not decide to take on the allergy bedding. I can just see feathers and such everywhere. And no vacuum to then torture with the mess.
