Several years ago my little sister bought a book for my son called “The Dangerous Book for Boys”. It is a wonderful book full of tips on adventures, experiments and stuff to do when you are bored. We have loved that book!

So, fast forward a couple of years and you will find my friend Christy and I having a conversation about her children and how she wished she could find a great gift for them for some occasion. Her son was at that hard to buy for age that all boys reach. Toys are too immature and electronics too expensive. See, that is the issue with boys, with girls there is always the option of clothes, shoes, make-up and handbags. Girls are SOOOO much easier to buy for.

I started telling her about the book that Tate had received and how much we loved it and let her know that there was also an edition especially for girls called “The Dangerous Book for Girls”. Both of her children received copies of those books that year and they have loved them as much as we did.

Fast forward another year or so and you meet head on with today. As I was sitting here today working on several projects for my job and trying to meet deadlines that have to be met the UPS man arrives and hands me a package that I wasn’t expecting.

Chuka

Having an energetic puppy that gets into EVERYTHING is a day to day challenge but when something new arrives…Whoooo Boy, you better look out! If you follow me on Facebook you get to see a lot of what Chuka gets into and why he makes me want to put him in one of those  amish baby cribs, only made out of steel instead of wood. He is a hot mess…and well, Chuka just couldn’t wait for me to open the package. Little did I know, the package was for him. OhMyStinkinHeck! Now I am in for it. What did he get? Well, let me just show you:

Dangerous Book for Dogs

Description From Amazon: The Dangerous Book for Dogs asks a simple question: isn’t there more to being a dog than wearing a mini cashmere sweater and riding around in a $400 evening clutch? What about the simple pleasures of life — feeling the wind in your fur, digging up the grass beneath your paws, smelling another dog’s butt? Isn’t that part of the great joy of being a dog?

Written (with help) by dogs and for dogs, The Dangerous Book For Dogs provides insight on everything from the tastiest styles of shoes to chew to the proper method for terrorizing squirrels. It also contains portraits of noble dogs throughout history, the mysteries of cats and humans, and everything else your dog ever wanted to know but was afraid to ask–like how to make toys out of human’s household items, or how to escape from a humiliating reindeer costume.

Christy sent him this book. What was she thinking??? He definitely needs NO help in the mischief department! I think I may be in for it even more.

Seriously though, this is one of the cutest books I have ever seen. It talks about all things dogs need to know such as how to deal with cats, what shoes are good for chewing and which to stay away from, etc. If you have a loved pooch you should most definitely invest in a copy. It is great for spending some quality together time with your four-legged friend.

I just want to say, the folks who wrote these books have no clue who I am and they had nothing to do with me writing this post. I just felt like you needed to know all about them in case you have kids or critters. You are seriously going to love the books!

The Complete Idiots Guide VS For Dummies

We have all seen them. Orange or Yellow? The Complete Idiot’s Guide or the For Dummies? Pepsi or Coke? McDonald’s or Burger King? Windows or Mac?

These well-known brands have gone head to head for many years to see which products consumers prefer. And I have been comparing the two books to see which I prefer.  You may be familiar with both the bright orange covered how-to idiot’s guides books as well as the yellow dummies, but have you ever compared them?

The Complete Idiots Guide To Calculus

We took on the challenge by comparing the guides for Chemistry and Calculus. Whew, deep subjects, both of which I am an Idiot or Dummy in, whichever way you want to lean. But, Tate is taking both subjects…and there are times that I have to help. (insert a LARGE sigh and eyeroll here). I have to say, both guides are great in their own right. Let’s Compare:

The Complete Idiots Guide: LOVE how the definitions, Critical Points and Kelly’s Cautions are in boxes and are clearly pointed out. Kelly’s Cautions were REALLY helpful in cautioning against commonly made mistakes. I also really like the “You’ve Got Problems”. They helped to give something to work out and teach you as well as giving the answer to check yourself to make sure you got it right. The comics provided a good laugh needed when dealing with such deep subjects. The Glossary was helpful for quickly finding definitions. The one downfall was that there was no index.

For Dummies: Provides good tips, comics, and I loved that it had an index to quickly find and refer to the material you are studying. It doesn’t have a glossary and the tips sometimes blend into other material and isn’t clearly pointed out. I did like the “Top Things to Remember”.

Both Guides are pretty good but I leaned more using the Idiots Guides and would have used them exclusively if there had been an index. The Idiots Guides did seem to flow smoother for me and were easier to navigate. Comparing these turned out to be a much bigger task that I anticipated. I knew I Math was not my best subject but WHOA, I found out just where my shortcomings are. I did learn a lot and was able to help Tate in a much better way thanks to the guides because without them…I am lost.

I do think that the Complete Idiots Guides are a great addition to typical school curriculum and have been a fabulous addition to our homeschooling curriculum. Erin also used the Calculus to help her with her college homework. And there are so many subjects that you could find The Complete Idiots Guide to most anything that you want to learn about. Check them out when you get time, you won’t be sorry you did!

Are you looking for a great movie for your family this weekend? Check out “A Mile In His Shoes”!

From the director of “Angels In the Outfield” comes an inspiring story about a special boy with an amazing gift, and the coach who believed. Dean Cain and Luke Schroder star in the gmc World Premiere Movie: “A Mile In His Shoes,” Sunday, September 25 at 7 & 9 PM ET.

A Mile in his shoes 1

Based on the book written by acclaimed author Frank Nappi. “The Legend of Mickey Tussler” is the 2008 novel based on a 17-year-old baseball player of the same name, who scores a roster slot with the Boston Braves’ minor league team.

Canyon River Rats Coach Arthur Murphy (Dean Cain) is absolutely awestruck by Mickey’s (Luke Schroder) pitching arm when he sees him pitching apples, but can it work?  Mickey has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, which leads to an endless stream of challenges. Will his over-protective father even allow him to try-out? Will Mickey be able to leave the farm and his pet pig Oscar behind? How will he ever make it in the world outside the farm without his mother?

I don’t want to tell you too much and ruin the movie, but I can say this is a MUST see film perfect for the whole family. Full of heart warming moments and life-lessons.

I LOVE Jigsaw Puzzles. During the colder months I usually always have one out. And I can usually average a 1,000 piece puzzle every few days, depending on how cold it is and what my schedule looks like.

It all started when I was really young. I grew up in an OLD Antebellum home that was built in the 1800′s. That means…no air, no heat, no insulation, icicles hanging off you the moment you step out of the shower. It was a COLD house in the winter and there was no way you could heat it all. So, while we slept in the bedrooms (with 10 blankets on your bed) we lived in one or two rooms while we were awake. And my Mom would always have a puzzle going to provide some entertainment. Now, all of us love puzzles and we all still look forward to getting one each Christmas.

Most puzzles do not provide much of a challenge for me. But last year I came across some puzzles by Artist Alex Beard, known for demystifying art and engaging people in the creative experience. His work is amazing and I immediately fell in love with Impossible Puzzles. Just recently Alex announced the 2nd Annual “Alex Beard Impossible Puzzles Contest.” This contest, designed to help break down the barriers between the artist and his audience, encourages people to think outside the box and challenge one’s creativity.

Most puzzles have interlocking pieces that fit together, and some have evolved to 3D versions and computer adaptations, but the end goal remains the same: to recreate the picture on the front of the box.  Alex Beard’s line of Impossible Puzzles combats the theory that a puzzle can only result in one picture.  In Beard’s line of work, the goal is creativity, curiosity and novelty.  With his line of Impossible Puzzles, Beard proves that by looking at the jigsaw puzzle with a new perspective, anything is possible.

“I am thrilled to be launching the 2nd Annual Impossible Puzzles Contest in partnership with Borders,” says Beard, owner of the Alex Beard Studio. “What a fantastic way to break down the barriers between ‘the artist’ and ‘the people,’ and what a fantastic partner I have in Borders to make it happen!”

“We’ve recently added a large assortment of adult games and puzzles here at Borders and the ‘Impossible Puzzles Contest’ is a great way to engage our customers around our new offerings,” said Michele Cloutier, Chief Merchandising Officer for Borders, Inc.  “We can’t wait for our customers to show their creativity by designing their puzzle for a chance to win some great prizes.”

The Alex Beard Impossible Puzzles contest encourages people to create their own puzzle art based on original works by Beard. In other words, the final result should not mirror the picture on the box cover!  Each puzzle piece can be rearranged into a new composition, a new outline, a new image- a work of art of the puzzler’s very own. In the Impossible Puzzles collection, some shapes have common outlines, so there is more than one choice for what can fit.  The pieces do not snap into each other, but settle beside one another instead, making the puzzle exponentially more challenging.  While there is actually only one correct piece that combines with its neighbors to assemble the puzzle as intended, the pieces can be combined in infinite ways to create new puzzles and new shapes.

For example, the giraffe creation on the right was made from the pieces of the Abstract puzzle on the left!

“Art is a medium accessible to everyone,” says Beard.  “I try to break down the artistic process by engaging with my audience and I always encourage questions and feedback.  My goal in creating the Impossible Puzzles was to make art available to people from all walks of life in a different way, and hopefully open up a new world of creative thinking for them.”

“I was not compensated in any way for this post. I didn’t receive a puzzle. I just wanted to tell you about a fun contest that will make you think outside of the box because thinking inside the box can be lonely…and boring…and stiffling…and well, it isn’t in my nature to think inside the box. Alex Beard really has no clue who I am even though I know who he is. Ohhh, that sounds kinda like I am a stalker doesn’t it? I am really not a stalker. Or at least I don’t think I am. Anyway, all that to say that I wasn’t paid for this post but I was given some of the information and I wanted to share it!”
