One of the rules at my house for any meal is that you eat at the table. No food in the living room or bedrooms. We eat as a family. It is our time to connect and visit with one another, no matter how crazy our schedules get. It has been that way since the beginning…and will always be that way as long as I am alive. It is important to me. When the kids would have friends over they would occasionally comment that they ate in their living room while watching TV, or that they never ate as a family at all. I just can’t fathom that being us. As we sit down at the table there is no TV or outside distractions, it is OUR time. Over the years I have learned a lot about my kids that I would otherwise have never known. We talk about our day, what is going on with each person and the people they hang out with. We talk about current events, religion, politics, the future…you name it, we talk about it. Many a memory has been made at my table…none of which I would trade anything for…Game nights, recipe creation, heirloom recipes, coupon clipping, laughter, sadness, seriousness, life-altering, taste-testing, crafts, party after party, holiday after holiday. As the kids have gotten older their time with us becomes more precious. They go out into the world and start learning to live their own lives and I know that one day they will be off on their own and will not sit at my table on a daily basis. The way we connect will change, it will be through phone calls, text messages and video chat, but I will always have the moments of daily conversations as well as serious life changing conversations that took place at my table. As I sit at that same table writing this to you I think about all the conversations that my particular table have held. See my table is over 100 years old. It is the table that my great grandparent sat at with their children, and the table that my grandparents sat at with their children. It has held generations of my family for not only daily meals but special occasions. It was the table at which I told my grandparents I would be getting married, it is where they found out about their future great grandchildren, it is where she told me that my grandfather was dying, it is where we sit at every meal still today.  This table holds many moments, suspended in time to be played back over and over again.
