THE ESSENTIAL MARIAH CAREY CELEBRATES

HER FIRST DECADE ON COLUMBIA, 1990-1999

28-TRACK, 2-CD COLLECTION CONTAINS 14 #1 HOT 100 HITS,

PLUS RARE REMIXES AND SELECTED ALBUM TRACKS

Mariah Carey’s first decade of record-setting hit singles, remixes and fan-favorite album tracks are collected on THE ESSENTIAL MARIAH CAREY.  The 28 tracks on this double CD laid the foundation for five-time Grammy Award®-winner Mariah’s reign as the top-selling female recording artist in history with over 200 million albums, singles and videos sold worldwide.

THE ESSENTIAL MARIAH CAREY , which is an update of 2001’s Greatest Hits with four different tracks, will be available everywhere starting May 8th through Columbia Records, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

“I wanted to create a collection of some of my favorite songs,” explains Mariah.  “Several of them are very big hits and some are more obscure favorites of mine as well as fan faves.”

At the core of this set is the extraordinary run of early RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit singles that kept her phenomenal vocal artistry at the forefront of pop music consciousness for that first decade.  Fourteen of those chart-toppers are included here:

  • 1990: “Vision Of Love,” “Love Takes Time”
  • 1991: “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” “Emotions” (included here in its 12-Inch Club Mix)
  • 1992: “I’ll Be There” (featuring Trey Lorenz)
  • 1993: “Dreamlover,” “Hero”
  • 1995: “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day” (Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men)
  • 1996: “Always Be My Baby”
  • 1997: “Honey”
  • 1998: “My All”
  • 1999: “Heartbreaker” (featuring Jay-Z); “Thank God I Found You” (featuring Joe & 98º)

Mariah Carey completists will appreciate that this ESSENTIAL contains four tracks newly chosen by Mariah herself for the occasion:

  • “Vanishing,” Mariah’s debut as a producer, from her self-titled debut album of 1990
  • “Close My Eyes,” a confessional track from the Butterfly album, evoking her new freedom as a single woman in 1997;
  • “The Roof (Mobb Deep Extended Version),” also from Butterfly, Mariah’s first track with the songwriting-production duo Poke & Tone, aka the Trackmasters (Jean Claude Oliver and Samuel Barnes);
  • “Bliss,” from her next album, 1998’s Rainbow, one of six tracks on that album that were co-written and co-produced by Mariah with the Flyte Tyme Productions team of Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Big Jim Wright.

In addition, Mariah has included two rare alternate remixes on this ESSENTIAL collection, both on disc one.  “Emotions (12-inch Club Mix),” from 1991, the title track of Mariah’s second studio album, is a remix of her record-setting fifth consecutive #1 hit single.  “Anytime You Need A Friend (C + C Club Remix),” from her third studio album, 1993’s Music Box, was remixed by her friends Robert Clivillés and David Cole of fellow Columbia Records group C + C Music Factory, who played such a crucial role as writers and producers on Mariah’s early studio albums.

Mariah Carey’s Cinderella storybook signing to Columbia Records in 1990 is entwined with the magic of that decade.  At the very outset, she accomplished what no other pop artist had done in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, sending her first five consecutive singles to the #1 spot.  Indeed, eight of her first ten singles hit the #1 spot between 1990 and 1993, and the decade would see Mariah place 15 hits at the top of the Hot 100 through 1999.

In 2005, Mariah earned her 17th #1 career single (“Don’t Forget About Us”), tying one of the most enduring chart records in Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley’s 17 #1’s.  Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis with her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit (“Touch My Body”).  Mariah is currently positioned as the only active recording artist in the 54 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles’ all-time high of 20 #1 hits.

  12. My favorite mother is both my grandmother and mother. My grandmother raised not only me and my two siblings but her 8 kids and my 5 cousins as well. That’s not counting all the family, friends,and neighbors who used to call her mom. Her pride was in doing for others. Her favorite story to tell was when she fed 29 people in one meal. The amazing thing is aside from working 1/2 a day at an ice cream stand when she was 15, the only work she ever done in her life was housework. Given the size of the family we had, that would had taken an army to clean up after. She was laid to rest 10 years ago. May God bless her soul.

    My mother was a mother at a very early age, 15 years old. She was generous enough to see that she did not have the capabilities to provide for her children the lifestyle we deserved so therefore brought us to our grandmother who was able to. This I see as the most unselfish act anyone could have done. She was still actively involved with our lives and at the age of 12 my siblings and I moved in with my mother. My mother and I had our ups and downs and she lived a lifestyle at times that I did not agree with. She was a wonderful grandmother, giving to her grandchildren what she was unable to provide for her own children when we were younger. I respect her choices.Now that she is gone to glory as well, truly miss her. I know that they both left footprints in my heart that will live on forever. As well as an inspiring video of words to live by for all those who are willing to listen to it.

    Both my grandmother and mother were strong in character and strength. They taught me how to call on Jesus when there was something I felt I could not endure. I remember when I first learned how to pray my grandmother sat me in the kitchen with a chair directly across from. She explained that Jesus was my best friend and that I was to talk to him just as if he was sitting right there with me. Tell him everything you feel you need to express from that day, even if I know he already knows. Tell him anyways. That is how I formed my relationship with God.

    I was blessed to spend my mother’s last 52 days with her. Although it had been years since she called upon Jesus. I was blessed with the opportunity of reintroducing her to him and all his wonderful blessings this past May, 2011 before her passing July 23, 2011.

    Thru these women I have learned not to think inside of a box but to place no limits on my goals. I have learned to face adversity with a smile because good or bad, we still have to push forward. I have learned to live a life that is so full of positive influence that when I die even the undertaker will have something good to say. Most importantly, treat each individual with the same love and respect you have for Jesus. You never know when you are in the presence of an angel. With God you may endure the things you could not picture yourself even having to face.

    I could go on forever describing the wonderful, caring, loving, strong, influential women they are but I believe you get the point. Even if I do not get picked, I really enjoyed being able to reflect back and share with others the two most beautiful, influential, women who have touched not only my life but the lives of others as well.

  17. My mom, God rest her soul, is my favorite mom. Although she wasn’t perfect, she was eager to learn from her mistakes and make things right. Before she died, little did we know she was making things right by improving relationships that were broken for many years. Her death was a shock and unexpected but her actions prior to her death speak volumes of the person she was and the person she aspired to be.

  23. My mother who worked long hard days sewing in a factory. But she would make me a new outfit for school pictures the next day, for church, or any special occasion. She cooked great meals for supper. Kept my clothes clean and ready for wearing. I know I took her for granted so many times. She has been my “Guiding Light” “As my World Turns” while “Searching for Tomorrow”. She was my soaps buddy.
