Oh Lordy! I could eat my weight in fried green tomatoes. I love them, if they are done right. If they aren’t done right…well, let’s just say it could almost make you not want to eat another one ever again.

Fried Green Tomatoes

3-4 green tomatoes
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup corn meal
1/2 tsp salt & pepper
Milk
Vegetable oil

Mix together flour, cornmeal, salt & pepper ( I really don’t measure the salt and pepper, I just put what I want). Add enough milk to create a thick batter. Heat 2 inches of oil in a large skillet. Batter each tomato slice, and wipe off excess , or not. Carefully place in hot oil, browning on both sides. (may or may not need turning, depending on the amount of oil) To cool, drain in a colander to keep tomatoes from becoming soggy. Salt to taste.

Over the years I have added a few things to my batter, like cayenne pepper. It gives them a little kick. I have used seasoning salt instead of regular salt. There are many things you could do to tweak the recipe a little.

  1. I like conola oil. Taste more like greese to me.

  2. I LOVE fried green tomatoes. I just introduced them to Thatboy in September!

  3. I am going to have to try these this week. Looks like I finally have to pick mine and bring them all in the house. So far they have survived in the garden-all the way to November! But fried green tomatoes sound yummy!
